89 DS Club Car without batteries

Just became a member, just bought my first cart...89 club car DS (A8902 ID'ed from another post Thanks!) My Question: The cart has no batteries. I think it is a 36 volt system with a coiled resistor group assembly. I want to build the cart for hunting and it's pretty hilly with some muddy bottoms. What should I consider...staying with the 36 volt system or changing over to a newer 48 volt? If going to 48volt...should I go with Six-8volt batteries or eight-6volt batteries?

I have lots of other questions but this will get me started! Thanks for any help you can give me!!

The resistor car will be ok just as long as you dont put a lift kit on it,the resistors wont handle the strain.

I plan on putting a lift kit on the cart with a rack on the back and possible basket on the front.

You can make a great hunting buggy out of this 89 CC IF you convert it to solid state speed control. You can run the old motor on 48v for the best of both speed and torque. It is a win win conversion....

What would be the best combination of batteries?? 6v, 8v, or 12v?

What are the advantages of each??

Batteries store amps for the motor to consume .... the more lead you have the larger your storage capacity.

Ok SottyB...if I understand you correctly the greatest amp storage life would be eight-6volt .....the next would be six-8volt batteries. Right??

When or does cable length become a factor when adding batteries??

(compartment set up for 6 batteries so would have to mount others..maybe behind the seat backs like another post mentioned)

There are prolly 20 of em I just can't remember where to find one off the top of my head... Quickly, here is the difference.

Early carts ( pre 89-90ish) had speed regulation resistor coils. When you stepped on the gas 100% of the available battery power (amperage) was drawn and speed was regulated by how much of this amperage was burned off (wasted) by the resistor coils. So even if you push the peddle a little it drains the batteries same as wide open throttle.

Modern carts use solid state speed control. These controllers only draw as many amps as you ask for with the peddle.... If you push the peddle down 10% they deliver 10% of their capacity. I say their capacity because a controller is like a gate valve to the amperage stored in the batteries... We have different size controllers(valves) available so 10% of a 400 amp is less than 10% of a 650 amp controller.
The solid state controller does not waste any amps and this increases the run time.Hope this helps?
