Default MCOR WOT Voltage/Low speed shutter/Speeds..

First off thanks for the great site here at BGW!

I just recently added everything in my Signature. Did it all myself from reading and learning here. I hardly drove my newly purchased cart at all before i ripped her apart for the mods. Stay tuned for a build thread with pictures. I did notice prior to the tear down there was some shuttering as I slowly rolled on the throttle from a dead stop which disappears at speed. The shuttering occurrs in forward and reverse. I left the stock motor in for now and have the shuttering problem guessed to be brushes? See below for possible MCOR clues.

For giggles i checked the MCOR and it was only reading about .84-1.01V set of 20 DC on my trustee Harbor Freight multimeter. That was the full throttle read from the positive wire on the yellow wire at the MCOR and the negative on battery #6. From my prior research the read should be around 7.8V. I am either reading the MCOR wrong or its bad?

My top speed with new mods in sig was approximately 17-18 MPH per GPS on flat land which seems normal. When I hit some grade it slowed drastically to about 10 MPH per GPS. This is with the Alltrax 4855 500A controller. I was hoping for a little more torque power going up grades even with the stock motor.... Does this sound normal for a 500a controller mated to a stock CC motor?

Thanks in advance

What are the voltage and S/G readings on your batteries? AND what is their date code?

Hi Scotty I was kinda hoping you would chime in.
After all the reading I have done here I should have put the #1 most requested battery info in the thread. Because you never know who is trying to fix a cart with 10 year old batteries!

Date code X14-G8 so Im guessing july 08 or 1.5 old. Currently 50.8V and doing good. However these batteries were bought new at indicated time and sat for that year and a half until I got them recently and I have not used cart much due to all the modding.

SG readings?

Yep sg readings atleast 1 hour after charging...... Setting discharged is bad for batteries even when they are new .... You are describing weak batteries

The batteries sat in cart after a full charge per the guy I bought it from. I never had the pack go below 50V. I am trying to learn why these might be weak batteries outside of the voltage readings? It is a 6 8V battery set up in case by chance you thought it was a 4 12V set up.

So what do I do now sir? Do you think the battery condition is causing the low speed shuttering? and that the speeds I am getting now are ok? mcor ok? charge run down repeat? rinse wash repeat? new batts?

I got a lot done on my cart being a total newb. Also I am no sparky for the record..

Thanks

Ok I just schooled myself on SG and am going to the zone tomorrow to get a hydrometer. Ill post the info later tomorrow. Thanks!

I did check the pack and indiv battery voltages several times and before and after about 4 total charges and I checked the batteries prior to purchasing. I didnt see any unusual numbers that were much different than each other. All batteries were holding about the same voltage. The charger also seemed to be in good working order scaling down the charge through the process and ending with a long 2amp topper charge...

Thanks again

Here is the battery chart you can use for comparison. Your 8 volt battery readings and S/G is all here ... Remember to keep your batteries above 50% capacity for longest useful life.... Post your newest SG readings and voltage readings taken atleast 1 hr after the charge is complete. 1 hr is surface charge settling time I would expect better hill climbing with a 500a controller. I suspect weak battery readings are coming.

Sounds like you are doing your homework and if anyone can help scottyB is the one.

When U say "All 4GA" in your signature , is that all #6 converted to #4's or just Battery cables ?

Scotty,
Update #1:
I charged the batteries over night and have no idea when the charger stopped but I checked it during the last hour or two of charging and it was almost 62V during the top off charge. Reading it now the next day shows an even 51V for the pack. Batteries: 1=8.53, 2=8.53,3=8.52,4=8.53, 5=8.49,6=8.52.

I ordered the hydrometer from AZ and have to wait a few days for the SG results.

Gmorrison,
Yeah that is correct all 6GA converted to 4GA. Meaning all cables to motor, controller, F/R switch, sol, etc. I'll try and get my build pics up here asap.

Thanks

I just went for a spin in the cart for about a half hour and burned the pack voltage down to about 49V. Still weak on the grades and slowing to 10 MPH and top speed was 16.7MPH per gps of level ground. When I got home I plugged them immediately back in for a recharge.

Since these batteries were never really broken in until now should I be doing this different? Meaning should I be running these batteries down to 48.4V (50%) and then rechargeing? Or am I going about it right now with less of a drain then recharge?

Will these batteries come back or is this a fruitful attempt to save these batteries?

On a side note I noticed all my tire and rims which I ordered are out of balance and have a good wobble! I thought they would have/should have came balanced especially since the the tires are already mounted. Do the lift/tire and wheel packages come balanced usually?

Thanks
