ScottyB and Dougmcp, thank you both very much for your help and insights.

I purchased the cart for next to nothing ($450) since the guy thought it wasn't worth anything as it wasn't running. He figured the charger was worth more than the cart at the time. So if I do end up frying the solenoid's then I'm not out much money since I'll have to replace them anyways to properly convert with a controller, pbox, etc... for additional performance gains down the road.

Of course safety is important and I prefer not to melt my backside to the seat or pull a granny and run the cart thru the back of the garage either, but I now have the knowledge in hand to move forward.
