Solenoid Question
Hi -
New to the forum ... great info and help. I try to help folks in my 55+ park with misc. repairs. Today I was asked to help with a golf cart that just won't go. From reading several forum posts, I think I've narrowed the problem down to the solenoid and would like some input as to if I have diagnosed the problem correctly. OK, I have 48+ volts to one side of the solenoid (large solenoid terminal and battery -) and nothing on the 2nd large terminal with key on, in forward and peddle depressed. I have 48+ voltage touching the two small solenoid terminals with key on, in forward and peddle depressed. When I ohm check the two small posts I do get continuity. I don't think I hear or feel clicking from the solenoid when depressing peddle with everything on, but I do hear a click, but think it's coming from the V-Glide (??). Does this diagnosis seem correct? I'd like to give you info on the cart, but the serial # starts with AB02 and according to a post here, indicates a 36 volt cart, but it's definitely 48, so I guess it's a rebuilt "Hybrid" (???). Also, it doesn't seem to have electronic speed control, as there a series of coils located in front of the motor. I appreciate any input, as I hate to be a parts changer and have these folks buy a solenoid only to find it's not the problem. Thanx!!! |

Re: Solenoid Question
Hello, CC never made a 48 volt resistor coil cart. So somebody has put 8v batteries in a 36v cart... 2003 was the last year of these resistor carts. Your solenoid diagnosis seems solid to me. One last test you can do is bolt a battery cable from large post to large post. Then test the cart, if solenoid is bad and activation circuit is good as you said? ... the cart should run.
A word of caution is in order on this cart. This is not a good set up as many of the speed components in the cart are not designed for this much voltage. Be sure to put a 48v solenoid in it |

Re: Solenoid Question
Thanx for the quick response. So, if I understand you think someone just replaced the 6 volt batteries with 8 volt ones? From what the owner tells me, he purchased the cart as a rebuilt and was told everything was "torn down" and either replaced or rebuilt. I think I'll just go ahead and replace the solenoid, definitely using one for 48v. Is that all I would need to ask for: a solenoid for a 48v system? Would the store I purchase from need to know about the resistor system? By the way, I did "jump" the solenoid terminals with a screwdriver and the cart "jumped". I assume that would kinda be the same as using a jumper cable. Again, I appreciate this help as I'm sure the owner of the cart does also.

Re: Solenoid Question
I don't know about elec carts but you need a small jack if you are going to be doing much work. That screw driver could have welded and you would be collecting the pieces all the way into the next county.
Nice to help folks. |

Re: Solenoid Question
Thanx for the help. Replacement solenoid was the answer (@ $85.00). I had to stop @ three shops to get an identical solenoid and all were amazed that it was a resistor cart @ 48v. Oh well, I guess if it works. And, by the way, I'll remember about the jack stands in the future.
Thanx all again! |
