Charger Will Not Shut Off

I have a 48V 2001 CC and after researching through other threads all day on why my charger would not shut off (keep charging at 2-3 amps). I figured I would post my own thread. I checked the batteries (all between 8.48V and 8.54V), reset the computer and tested the computer (by trying to drive cart with the charger plugged in). Finally I thought I would just go back to basics and found that the red cable going from the last battery (underneath passenger seat) to the computer area had a lot of corosion on it and was essentially connected by a small thread of cable. It was connected so weakly, I was able to pull the conncection ring off the cable with no effort at all. I have other cables, but they are at my storage locker at the golf course where I keep my cart for the summer. I am going to get the cable tomorrow, but by changing that cable, do you think that will take care of my problem, or do I have bigger problems with my cart/charger. Any info would be helpful. thanks.

It is a problem but, I doubt that is the actual charger problem. Is it a cable in the charging circuit? is it the cable that goes thru the OBC? Then maybe but, if that cable is hanging on by a thread then how bad are the others? Bad cables could resist charging. Most likely you have one or more bad batteries. How old are you batteries? Voltage readings are the poorest indicator of battery condition. Then Specific Gravity tests and Load tests in that order..... hope this helps

My batteries are 06 Trojan Batteries and seem to work fine. I recently bought the cart about 2 months ago and was doing some work on it today. I had it charging all day and realized it never shut off like my older cart did. I do have a specific gravity tester and plan on checking that tomorrow, but it is one for 6 or 12 volt batteries, Will that still work. Also all the other cables are fine, I was taking all the cables off and cleaning them today and found it was bad. So no other cables are suspect. The cable that is bad runs from the battery to a connection by the OBC (I had to take off the black plastic covering underneath the storage basket to see where the cable conects). I haven't done much work with this carts but am trying to learn. Where is the easiest place to find a battery load tester. Thanks a lot

You will need a 48v load tester for that cart.... Usually find them at any dealer? Just pay them to load test if the problem persists. SG is the same reguardless of voltage.... post your findings here.

About the specific gravity testing. The first battery I tested had very low fluid in the first terminal, and that terminal was testing a low specific gravity of (1.10). Would that cause that battery to not charge and the charger not to shut off? I did add fluid (distilled water) but I don't want to charge it yet, since all the other batteries are at full charge. The other terminals in that battery were 1.275 across the battery. All the other batteries were between 1.250 and 1.275. Some of the terminals were a little low with fluid, so I filled them as well. It is raining today and do not want to drive around, nor can I because I am buying a new cable tomorrow, since the one cable is bad. So long story short, would one low battery terminal cause the charger to stay on longer. Thanks

I keep my golf cart in a shed beside my gargage. Periodically during the winter one nice days I take it out, ride it around the housing plan for a little while, then charge again. The cart was close to full charge, road around and plugged it in. It started charging at between 15-20 Amps and slowly lowered to 2-3 Amps after about 4 hours. It proceeded to stay at 2-3 amps for another 6 hours, until I unplugged it to research why it would not shut off. I let the cart sit for about an hour before testing the Voltage's of the battery. thanks

The automatic chargers with 48 Volt carts which have OBC's will charge as much as 10-12 hours if pack is depleted. They will automatically shut off after 16 hours to keep from
harming the batteries.

My suggestion is
Check the water level in the batteries, fill only with distilled water to 1/2" above plates.
plug it back up when you get home from work , leave it until bed time.
Do this for the next 2-3 days and see if it shuts off automatically .

Then go back and re-check the low SG (specific gravity of (1.10).

hi, i also have a 48 v cc that has the same problem as yours , i think, but i'm not ready to part with the $$ for a new on board computer, i have 06 batts too,, one question for you ,, when you plug your charger into the cart does the charger come on full power instantly and stay on, or does it take a couple of seconds then come on for a few seconds cut off for a second then back on full,, mine cuts on instantly as i plug it in and stays on until i unplug it, my other carts take a couple of seconds then come on for a few seconds cut off for a second then back on full, i think its our obc's
