Default Newbie Question

Is there a trick in compressing the C clip that sits behind the wheel hub.

I have a pair of C clip inner/outer pliers. I can grab it through the gap between the hub and the brake back plate (not the hole in the hub) but when i try to compress it it just slips off right at the point where you start to hurl obscenities, and think hang on i'll get my angle grinder or saw and saw the hub off completely

Thanks

PS I'm trying to put new shoes and spings on etc, oh and the four bolts that hold the brake back plate to the axle flange are rusted out.

You dont need to pull the axle out to get the brake shoes off.
