Default OBC and 4ga wires

When upgrading to 4ga wires, is it neccessary to run the neg (-) wire from the battery pack to to the controller THRU the OBC? I've noticed from some pics the kits that are offered the cable ends end are installed, which is great except for the neg wire.

For pre-installed ends you can leave the original cable and run the new 4ga. around the obc. So both cables go to the same terminals but the old one which still goes thru the OBC is used to read voltage .....
