Need more torque

Hi guys, I just bought my first cart. It's a 92 CC with lift and 22" tires. Overall it's in excellent shape and I got too good of a deal on it to pass up. It runs good but I'm looking for more power, not speed. I have to press the pedal all the way just get it up small hills. I can also just barely hold the brake and it won't move at all with the pedal fully depressed. Just seems like it should have a little more power. Wondering if just upgrading the wires would be enough to help it or would a 400amp controller be needed too. Currently it has the stock 2hp motor and 275amp Curtis controller and 6ga. wires. Also the batteries are about 7yrs. old but they do charge to 38.2V with only about a .2V difference between each of them. Though they do seem to drain pretty quick. They are Trojan T-105. I have a similar cart. Changing the wires to a heavier guage will help but that alone won't be enough. With the tires you have and trying to climb any hills at all you will need a controller upgrade.

I've got a 91' CC 36V resistor style with 22" tires and noticed a big torque drop when I installed the tires. Picked up speed on the flats though!! Meaning the cart slows down quite a bit on hills. As my batteries are getting older I'm noticing that the torque/speed on the hills is slowing even more.

I'm in the process of upgrading to 500amp Altrex controller, C6pot, 4 AWG and know that it will make a big change.... I've got all the new solenoid, F/R switch and stuff for the 48V, but I'm planning on running the original 36v stuff until I'm ready to purchase new bat's.

7 yr old batteries should be reconized for their great service and then recycled I will bet from here, that you need batteries. the way to truely fix your complaint is to take this oportunity to get new 8v batteries and all of the neccessary components to upgrade that little suka to 48v. That set up will then climb 45 degee hills with athority and run 20mph on the flats. That will put a smile on your face.....

Thanks for your input guys. I agree with you Scotty about upgrading everything to 48v, but not quite ready to dump that much dough right now. I may go ahead and upgrade the wires and maybe controller and just run the batteries till they won't go anymore then I'll switch it over to 48V. They may last long enough for me to save enough money to purchase new batteries. Another question, when the time comes, would you just purchase six 8V batteries or 8 6V batteries. I think I could manage to mount two more somewhere on it. Also has anyone ever considered using 6 12V batteries and wiring 2 banks of three in series and then running the 2 banks parallel to each other. I know this would reduce run time, but I think it would provide more amperage to the motor. Just a thought.

check and clean all terminals, first try that
I read that 2 gauge was needed for 48volt
I upgraded from 4 gauge and it made a difference on mine
my controller is stock 275 amp

It just costs more and won't help or hurt your runtime.

This is kinda a catch 22.
as scottyb suggested it's nice to upgrade all at once.
You really need batteries, but buying 6 x 6 volt will keep U at 36 Volt.

Buying 6 x 8 would be the Ideal solution , but you need to check the controller
to see if it is labeled 36/48 volt (I doubt it since it's stock).
You will also need to upgrade solenoid(s) to 48 Volt.

If you are never going to use the bag-well (non golf use) you could get new 36 Volt Battery and then add 2 x 6 volt later (waiting too long is not good) to bag-well

So start with the Cable upgrade and upgrade ALL #6 to #4's or #2's.
Then make a decision on the other stuff and start accumulating parts until U'r ready to switch.

The motor is OK as is and can handle the added voltage.

So, will using 12v batts not increase the torque output of the motor. Just seems like it should considering it would be capable putting out twice the amperage than a conventional series wired battery system pending that you have a high amp controller. Again, this is just my thoughts and nothing i have tried yet.
