Trying to understand effects of bigger controller
My CC is back together with 8-6v batteries. I have added a 3" lift and 205-65-10 tires. First cart I have ever taken apart and put back together, so far no things flying off and no fires . This cart is used for cruising The Villages (smooth surfaces) and playing golf.
Trying to get a better understanding on effects of a bigger controller... This is an 02 Club Car DS with a stock 225A controller and a Advanced 6-223A 5.5 4700 motor (came with cart). I just upgraded all wires to 4ga, lifted and added larger tires. The speed of the cart is as advertised for that motor at 22-23 on flats. I am suspicious that after adding bigger tires, I have created a torque issue. The other day I was golfing and wanted to see how it pulled up a steep knob from stopped position on the face of the knob. It did not make it; it started and then stalled... I stopped the test and used the cart as normal for the rest of the day without issue. Up and down 'normal' hills... Assuming I have no wiring issue, is this an example of not enough torque? Would a new larger 400A controller solve this? If I go this route, I am wondering about other affects I will notice if I just replaced the controller (not the motor)... I suspect I would feel a difference 'out of the gate"? My gut feel is that I would not notice a difference cruising on flats? Would I notice a difference going up longer grade hills where I slow from 22 to 18? Anything else? This will likely be followed by a thread "trying to understand effects of 5700 motor As always thank you for any help!! |

Re: Trying to understand effects of bigger controller
2 things I can think of, first, the 400amp controller should help immensely for the torque required to climb hills. You probably won't see much or any difference in top speed.
Second, make sure after lifting, that your brakes are not hanging up or that the axle housing is not rotating in the clamps. |

I noticed big changes when I upgraded my cables, solenoid and controller. Just don't think it's going to climb a brick wall when you make those changes. I put 22" tires on mine. I'm very pleased with the added power I got, but I have tested it on some pretty steep hills and had to get off and push the skinny pedal while steering beside it.
Again, it had much more power, but I'm not sure how steep the hill is that you stalled on. The upgrades are much, much better, but they still don't perform miracles. After going back and reading your OP again, I see that your motor is twice as powerful as mind, so maybe you can expect miracles with that. Good luck with your cart. Looks good. |

Re: Trying to understand effects of bigger controller
My question would be;
