36v to 48v keeping resistor.. Bad idea?
My question is this. I have an 87 cc (resistor cart with 5 solenoids) if I upgrade the solenoids to 48v, upgrade the F/R switch and add 2 6v batteries (somewhere) would this be too tough on on my existing resistor coils or anything else? BTW I have already upgraded to 4g wire. I am happy with my current performance... but it this isn't too hard on anything, why not?

IMO, the cost of upgrading solenoids will be close to what a new controller would cost. Besides, the resistor was designed for 36v and to add voltage to it will shorten its life. I think you would spend about the same either way you go. I am in the same situation as I have a 86, and want to upgrade.

Sak00, on your 86 does it have 5 soliniods as well?

Good point. I'm sure I would need another type of speed controller as well vs. the microswitch setup.

Yeah..... it is a bad idea. The coils won't last. Club Car made some version of the resistor cart from inception (1974?) until 2003. All of them where 36v. I have put them on 48v but they soon self destruct. The added voltage creates too much heat 4 the old system to handle. If you are happy with your performance now then I would stick with it and start buying the needed 48v conversion components as you can until you have them all and are ready to DO IT

But boy o boy is it fun running 48v to those old coils, and I have always wanted to put 48v solenoids in a old cc but scotty always said no, it would cost to much to do it,

I'm confused, was that a jab at me?

Re: 36v to 48v keeping resistor.. Bad idea?
NO not at all I had an old resistor cart with six 8v batteries in it..... And I had to run it wide open throttle or nothing. So when bh and I went trail riding or off-roading I was flying everywhere I went.....
P.S. Eventually, somebody got into the cart who didn't understand it and the components melted It really is not a good way to go. |
