Precedent rear brakes

Hey gang,

Got a non lifted, '05 Precedent, and I am having trouble with the rear brakes.

The left rear brake seems to "hang up", or not release properly.

I got the brake cables disconnected at the clevis pins. When I operate the brakes with the lever that connects to the clevis pin, the left side hangs up, and won't release.

I am gonna hit it with some brake clean, but wondering if some sort of lube is supposed to be used on the lever and its mechanism at the bottom of the brakes. I know lubrication around the brakes is to be done with care - if at all.

Go in and clean the brakes up, make sure the slides move freely, that will keep the brakes from sliding and jamming forward.

Thanks for the reply.

Car is up on blocks and the drums are off the car.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are the "slides"?

When I activate the brakes using the lever, (the cables are disconnected) the self adjusters try to move the ratchet, and tighten the brakes. As well as the left side lever is hanging up, and won't release properly.

Any advise/help would be appreciated - thanks.

the bottom side of the brakes are on a "slider" You should be able to hit the bottom half of the brakes and they should move forward and backwards easy.

Thanks for your help.

I got the sliders moving freely, (both were frozen).

However, I cannot figure out how the adjusters are supposed to work.

I am assuming they are only supposed to ratchet (move brake shoese out) when the slider has shifted the brakes to the front (backing up). But my brakes move the ratchet no mater where the slider is positioned.

I have played with the sliders for over an hour, moving them back and forward, and I can't figure out why the brakes tighten when backing up & why they are not supposed to tighten when braking forward. Looks to me they tighten every time the brake pedal is depressed.

Help please. Dave

When I first got my cart the CC dealer told me to back up real fast and hit the brakes hard several times to help adjust them up! Your original problem was the left rear brake was hanging up and Fixer talked about the sliders. Since they are moving well for you now have you adjusted the brakes just enough to get the drums back on and the wheels to turn with just a bit of friction? I'd take your cart out and see how it does now.

I will take it for a drive and see how it does.

Just for my own preverted pea brain, I would like to know how those adjusters are supposed to work. Not saying mine do or do not work - just trying to figure out how they are supposed to function.

Your over thinking the whole process. You got some bad info. The going in reverse is not the adjusting part. The star wheel can and will turn in both directions. The going in reverse is to center the brakes in the drum so that they can make an adjustment if need be. Id say 85% of all golf car shops don't know how to adjust brakes correctly.

So Fixer, are you saying that while in reverse and the applying your brakes, the self adjusters will not bring the brake shoes closer to the drum?
