In Dash Battery Level Indicator Wiring

I just purchased a battery level indicator as per attachment. The only thing i am unsure about is the wiring associated with the key switch.

This is what he told me in an email.

Terminals and Wiring

1: Battery + 2: Battery-

4: Key Switch



1 will connect with battery + , and 2 will connect with battery - , mean while 1 and 4 connect together.


However if i connect 1 & 4 together that would mean the indicator would be permanently on?

So i wanted to connect it via the key switch so it turns off when the key is in the off position.

Just to make sure... based on the picture in your first PDF file it shows the back of the meter, square type. What numbers are for what lead?

It looks like the top right lead is for Pack negative, top left lead for pack positive and lower left switched positive. If that is the case it shows that the meter is connected to the pack all the time and the only thing the switch will do is turn on the display. Is this the way it's laid out?

Also I wouldn't use the orange and white stripe wire. Not completely sure on your cart but on mine there were two wires, a Red and a Black with yellow stripe that were for an Optional battery indicator. The black/yellow was the ground and the red was the positive and I believe switched. Do you have those wires as well and can you test them for power, switched, etc.?

The way he has said to wire it means it would be permanently on

My cart is a 2000 club car DS 48 volt

I believe so but his PDF instructions has a key switch in there so i.m presuming thats the Club car key switch. He.s mixed me up because in his email he doesnt mention a key switch just to connect the terminals 1 and 4 together like my pic above. I could however get a toggle switch i suppose and wire it in but i would have to remember to turn it off because i would assume if left on it would drain the batteries!

Your key switch is 48 volts correct... so if that's the case then you can connect on the always Hot side, (+) of your key switch #1 and the unswitched, (hot when key is On side,) your #4. If the initial wiring is supposed to have your unit hot all the time but the display off this should do it. Make sure your switch is 48v positive and know which lead is Hot and which lead is the hot after the key is turned on. You'll still have to ground to the main negative pack #2.

One other test would be to see what happens if you just have both the #4 & #1 connected to your keyswitch on side normally off, to see how long a startup of your meter would take once you turn your key to the on position. This would accomplish your completed off when the key is off in your first post. For example my LED meter is key switched now since it has only 2 wires, one for 48v + and one for 48v -. When my key is on it turns on. My digital is actually always on since it's hardwired to the pack's 48v but the display is switched by a separate toggle switch. I'm not sure what type of meter you have but if it's similar to my LED then either way should work.

Did you find the wires I spoke about before, the Black and Yellow as well as the Red lead used for an optional meter? If they are there use the Black/Yellow lead as your negative ground. Always test with a meter before using any leads for anything!

OK, so your key switch is 48+ right?
And do you have a good main pack ground in your dash that you're aware of?

You can try either way of connecting it up based on my previous post.

Read the Reset conditions for both the Battery Charging Reset as well as the Open Circuit Reset to see the difference between having the main part of the meter on, with #1 always 48v hot and #2 48v - and using a key switch for turning ONLY the actual Display off, #4. (The way they call for it to be on the PDF file.)

OR for the Open Circuit Reset which would be to have the entire meter on and off once the key is turned on.
