36v motor in a 48v cart

What is the deal with replacing 48v motors with 36v motors? Does it make that big of a difference. I guess I dont completely understand how it works, but what are the advantages of doing this? I have a perfectly good 36v motor laying in my garage and will swap it out if there are no risks involved. any info on this would help

I have been running 48v to a 36v motor for a few years now. It's GREAT! It provides more torque AND more speed. The best of both worlds!

I think he means taking a motor out of a 48v car and replacing with a 36v motor. Unless I got a good buzz and am reading this wrong.

You can only do this if your cart has a series motor that is not regen. If your forward and reverse switch is a lever [not a toggle switch] you have a series wound motor. To answer your question you can expect more speed with no damage to the cart or the 36 volt motor.

Like Gman said we have been putting 48v worth of batteries into 36v SERIES carts and finding a 30% increase in torque and speed without any negative side effects....... So it occurred to me one day that IN A SERIES CART you could replace the stock 48v motor with a 36v motor and see the same gains.... a couple of members have proved the theory correct

The key word is SERIES.... this will only work in a SERIES cart..... and of course the usual disclaimers apply

Only problem is those 36 volt motors are getting harder to find. Most people KNOW what they are good for.

OK, WHY? We bump 36v Sepex motors to 48v all day long. Why can't we replace a 48v Sepex motor with a 36v Sepex motor? Do they not exist?

Technically you are correct..... BH and I did bump a 36v PDS to 48v and it reacted well..... But there is not a stock 48v cart to dump a 36v sepex motor into? Not that I recall? Basically, I posted that to keep people from stuffing 36v series motors into sepex carts.
