Battery Boiling When Charging??
Lat night when I put my cart on the charger, after about 3 hours I could smell battery acid and when I looked at my batteries, half of them were boiling out of the top holes. The charger was at 0 amps so Im assuming that it meant the batteries were completely charged. What causes this? Is there just too much water in the batteries or what? They are only a year old Im told.

Re: Battery Boiling When Charging??
Could be a couple of things. To much water in the batteries. The charger isn't cutting off like it should. You have a battery or two that is failing causing the charger to boil the rest of them to try and make the one or two other's fully charge.
Take some voltage readings about 30 minutes after you finish charging them. Let them sit and cool off first. You didn't say what voltage the cart is. 36 = 42-44 volts after charging 48 = 52-54 volts after charging |

Re: Battery Boiling When Charging??
I just got an 06 ezgo with 06 batteries Torjan 105 I charged the batteries then removed them all. The water level was right at the top of the caps. some had spill out while charging because it was so full. I cleaned the battery, cables, and removed the high level of water. I reconnected the charger after all done. First it went to 20 amps then fell to 10 amps after about 15 minutes. then dropped to 5 amps and remain there. 2 hours later I checked them and saw the boiling and taking 5 amps. The battery were getting hit with 45 V and when I disconnected the charger the battery read 41.5 volt. Is this normal. What should a full charge set read. The hyprometer said the battery when in fair condition but close to needing a charger before starting to clean them up after the first charge.

Re: Battery Boiling When Charging??
The smell of acid is common when charging batteries. They do vent hydrogen gas during charge and they will boil. DONT SMOKE when you are charging batteries. If they boil over it's because there was too much water. That will eventually take care of itself. (at the expense of your concrete and battery holders!) They steam, water evapoates and it creates the need to add water. The water level should only be about 1/2" above the plates.(most brands)
If your batteries fully charged in 3 hours (0 amps), I would say they are probably in good shape. one bad, would cause the pack to overcharge.(take longer) It's not uncommon for our batteries to charge 8-10 hours before fully charged. That"s after 36 holes+ in one day. That is almost crawling.... |

Re: Battery Boiling When Charging??
I bought new interstate HD-M-24 and had them installed. I got it home and went for a cruise. 20minutes. I put it on the charger. I smell strong odor after about 3 hours. I left it on until it shut off. This morning it smell pretty bad. Is this normal for the first couple of charges?
