Default Stinky Dirty Batter

Checking water level this weekend on my batteries (05 CC DS) On Battery one I opened the cap and it smelled like sulfer. I grabbed a dropper and one cell had water in it that was black and almost chalky looking. I drained that cell of water and refilled it and then charged it. What would make that happen? Do I need to think about replacing that battery? I am a newbie so I appreciate the help! All the other batteries were normal. Can you replace just one battery? Thanks

Sounds like you have lost one battery and possibly more on the way? Do you know how old your batterys are? When you were checking the fluid level was it within an hour of heavy usage or charging? Have you checked batterys for level of charge either by voltage or better yet with hydrometer checking specific gravity which gives individual cell condition?
Yes you can replace one battery but I NEVER RECOMMEND doing that as you will ruin the new battery trying to get a full charge in the rest of the old high resistance batterys in the pack.
If finances are a problem I would try checking at local golf courses or cart dealers for used batterys until you can afford a new set.

Exactly what OLD MEC said.... by the way, never drain the cell and refill with water. There's a whole lot more than just water in those cells.. When you do that, you lose every bit of the electrolytes. Water won't hold power.

Thanks guys for the help!! The cart seems ok for now, should I just run these batteries into the ground before I purchase an entire new set? I use the cart for cruising the neighborhood. Have not seem to have had a charging problem so far, just that one bad cell. I did the dropper test with the hydrometer (I think) and all the balls rose to the top and seemed fine. What do you guys think or should I buy a new set of batteries. Can you help me as to where to buy batteries? Thanks

The hydrometers with the little balls are not accurate. You really need to get one that is temp corrected it will give you accurate readings of the cells. How old are these batteries? If you have $500-$700 just waiting to be spent get you some new batteries, but if you run and maintain what you got you should be ok for a little while

If the cart runs okay, go ahead and use them up ... they may last all season?
Do buy a new hydrometer as the floating ball models are junk... Good luck
