97 Electric CC Rear End Trouble
I have a 97 electric CC and here lately I am hearing a harsh "rattle" coming from the rear end of the cart when I either let off the gas or I get up to a decent speed. It's a 48V cart and it seems to also be slower than every other cart I have ever ridden. How would I diagnose these issues and fix them?

Re: 97 Electric CC Rear End Trouble
First have you check oil level in differential? Old mechanics trick is to first jack up rear end SOLID and block front wheels so ther can be NO MOVEMENT either way. Then have some one working throttle and ( SLOW SPEED ONLY AS MOTOR CAN OVER SPEED EASILY AND BLOW UP ARMATURE ) while you touch a wooden yard stick just below your ear and the other end around different areas on differential. This transfers sound to your ear and you should be able to pin point where noise is coming from. Some sound is normal and yes only one wheel at a time will rotate at a time and you will need to stop one to check the other.
One point to check real close would be the motor end where it mounts to differential because there is a sleeve-bushing unit between motor and differential that could be making sound? |

Re: 97 Electric CC Rear End Trouble
Old Mec is referring to the spline guide ring that fits on the end of the motor shaft to keep it from bouncing on the diff.spline coupling. When it becomes worn the motor spline rattles. You have to pull the motor, take the clip ring out that holds the guide ring in place. It is sometimes hard to pull the ring out but a sharp end pick should work. New guide ring cost is about $4. at CC dealer. when replacing the ring. Clean and use gasket cement. Be sure and line up the spline grooves in the ring with grooves on motor shaft before cement sets or you are back to square one (The pros use an old shaft to line up grooves). This is supposed to be a 1or2 hr. job but after 4/5 I am still at 3 hrs. Some say to drop a spring & jack up the cart to access the motor. I do it from above through inspect panel. Motor is heavy so I use an adjustable strap to hold it up for removing and replacement. DISCONNECT ALL POWER AT BATTERIES prior to messing with the motor cables. Good Luck.

Re: 97 Electric CC Rear End Trouble
DCANNOW--THANKS VERY MUCH for clarification to member, SO OFTEN my mind jumps over the top of my hands and especially in my advancing age what seems automatic to me is not so for the average person. Often my terminalogy is not from parts manuals but long before they were available I would tack on a term that means nothing to others???

Re: 97 Electric CC Rear End Trouble
Old Mec-My memory is not all that good either. I happened to have replaced a guide ring for my neighbor three weeks back so hadn't lost the info yet. I learned about this critter from Don, the Lockman1, a couple of years back and it saved me a lot of stress. I went on the forum and he responded with help. So now I get to return the favor to someone else. The system works. I have picked up a lot of good info from you the past year so keep up the posts. I hope JKECZAN lets us know if we helped with his problem.

Re: 97 Electric CC Rear End Trouble
jkeczan, when you pull the motor off and if it does not have the spline guide ring..........check and see if the motor coupler has a rubber bumper in it, if not just get a new rubber bumper and drop in, but when you put the motor back on you want to make sure you can slide the motor up and bump the rear case before you torque motor bolts..........this will keep you from burning up a motor bearing down the road.

Re: 97 Electric CC Rear End Trouble
jkeczan--
More info per the Lockman1 10/09 post. CC 36 & 48V 1992 to 1999 motors have Guide ring we are talking about. It is CC part #1017895-01 (grooves on inside of ring) CC 48v 2000 to 2005 has a bumper inside/back of spline housing CCpart #1022352-01 (grooves on ouside of bumper). If your 97 does not have the guide ring I suspect motor was changed out. Cost is not that much, order both to have ready when you pull the motor. Go for it Last edited by dcannow; 06-05-2010 at 09:53 AM.. Reason: correction |
