Default help with my neighbors golf cart

With everyones help here I just fixed my golf cart and got it running. Now I want to try to help my neighbor fix his. And I need help.

1-It will not charge - when the charger is plugged in nothing happens. How do I start to diagnose the issue, whether it is the carger or the cart?

2 - 36 or 48V?
If I remember correctly - the cart was a 36V and he had a lot of problems with it. He said the problems were fixed when he replaced the batteries with new ones from Sams Club. I looked in and the batters are 8V each. I looked at the serial number and it is: A9839-699748. Isn't this a 36V serial number? How else can I tell?

So if he put the wrong batteries in it what would happen? It did run for a while after he put the new batteries in.

Well if it was a 36 volt cart, and they replaced the 6 volt batteries with 8 volts making it a 48 volt string, the likely thing is the controller and solenoid is not rated for 48 volts and they burned them up.

It is a 98 36volt serial number which you can verify in the stickies. Some times people will upgrade to 48 volts for power and speed but did he do it right or just put the 8 volt batteries in? the 48 volts should kill the motor but if he was just tooling around with in stead of going all out he good have fried lots of lifferent components. Start by cheking and cleaning all the connections. Chargers usually have a built in saftey that repuires a minimum voltage to kick on. Can you check the charger on another cart? Or use another charger on his?

Thank you all for your responses.

Would burning up the controller and the solenoid stop the charger from working? Is there a way to check them? I have a multimeter, just need specific instructions.

He knows nothing about the cart. He had a pro work on the cart before, but he changed the batteries himself.
How do I tell if the cart was upgraded correctly for 48V?

My cart has a different connection for the charger so I can not check it.
Is there another way to check the charger?

If its a 36V charger it will not come on till the 48V pack is dead and ruined.
Take this step by step.
I think you need to search and find the thread 36 t0 48V,

OK guys keep the help coming.

It is a 36v golf cart with 48volts worth of batteries.

What is the next step - I looked it over tonight - it is in good shape so I think we are going to try to fix it.

I assume step one is to get the correct batteries?

8v in a 36v cart!? The least expensive thing you guys can do to fix this is to go back to Sams Club and buy six 6v batteries....

Are you 100% sure it is a 36v cart? They made both 36v and 48v carts in 98. The 36v would be a resistor coil cart. the charger plug would be a 2 prong. 48v would be a 3 prong round plug. Come-=on read the charger tag! what voltage is the cart

Scottyb - thank you - your knowledge seems to be unlimited

Nope, not sure, just assumed it is a 36V cart because of the serial number.

But it does have a round plug, but can not remember if it is 2 or 3 prongs - and since it is 3am I am not going to go over to his house and check right now. I don't want to get arrested.

Oh, and the charger has no tag that we could see.

But there is no resistor coil (if you mean the big coil like mine has) that goes between the 5 solenoids.

I will check inthe next few days and be back for more help.

OKAY. Now we know it is a 48v cart The serial # beginning with A simply means that it was built before CC start to designate separate #s to each model ....... it is not a voltage indicator. Both 36 and 48 volt carts were produced under the letter A. However, only the 48v carts used the round charger plug
