'94 CC 36V Solenoid problems, wont run.

Great Forum! I love that there is a resource for these types of questions online.

I've had a 94 club car 36V electric golf cart for awhile now and it's ran great. Starting last year I had a problem where the golf cart would be dead of charge and my charger would not charge it. I took it to the local club car dealer and he replaced my charger. NO change.

The cart would not run, so I towed it into him and he replaced a "Solenoid". This fixed the cart for around a month, then the same problem happened again. The cart was dead. Took it back and he replaced the same "solenoid" again. He also replaced the "Diod assembly". Again, this worked for awhile, and the golf cart blew out the same solenoid.

I'm sorry for not being terribly descriptive. The mechanic said he would keep replacing the solenoid so it would run, but it would be a reoccurring problem.

Question: Any idea what the root cause of this is? Mechanic keeps trying to blame the power source in my house! Obviously, this is not the problem as i've had my friend who is an electrical engineer test the outlet and found it to be in perfect working order.

I'm assuming something is tripping the solenoid, but I do not know what. I want to take it to another mechanic, but I dont want to go in cold. Any ideas I could bring to this new mechanic?

The power in your house should NOT be blowing a solenoid......

Possibly overvoltage of the pack causing this?

I would try a HD solenoid just for grins, since you're buying them regularly.... A stock unit is 100 amp continuous duty. Try a 200 amp continuous duty. Remember to stay 36v. Get a new 250ohm resistor and 1amp diode installed on the new solenoid and see if that doesn't hold up? What do you think rabbit? Any harm in trying this?

I can't see any harm in trying a HD unit.... Cost difference is minimal and if it fixes the problem should be well worth the investment. I am curious as to the pack voltage though... Maybe the charger is outputting too high a voltage to the pack? Can you get a pack reading Before, During and After charging the cart? I remember years ago when we upgraded Tiger Woods Cart to 48 volt, we left the 36 volt solenoid on the cart (stupid I know) for testing purposes and we blew that solenoid in about 2 weeks.

Stupid? I don't know .... did his wife bring the cart back for repairs




My first 48v conversion I left the 36v prestolite solenoid in there and it was still good 1 year later

No, but I met here a couple of times at their home as well as at Bayhill. Funny thing about his cart... E-Z-GO donated the cart to him but because he lives (lived) in Isleworth, we had to paint the car "Club Car Beige" or he couldn't take it on the course..... Oh and he is a huge country music fan.... every preset on his stereo was a country station....

those 36 volt Prestolite solenoids are tough, the E-Z-GO silver 100 AMP units are crap compared to them. Especially the years that E-Z-GO outsourced them and was installing non-WR knockoffs........

I don't want to hijack this thread, but have similar problem. I just ordered 4th solenoid in a month....see thread 94 cc cart quit again. I still don't have an answer, it seems mine are blowing while charging and key on for some reason.

for the 1st poster have they figured out why your batts keep going dead?? that has nothing to do with a bad solenoid unless the noid is staying energized and killing it but unlikely to have several solenoids do the same thing.......i do agree with going to a H.D. white rodgers solenoid and see what happens but i would go further and and have batts checked out real good..................................

I agree with TOM. and to Pitstop turn the dang key off once in a while....... or when you charge. does that fix it?

Key off, car in Neutral, charger cord through the steering wheel. Simple and easy to do and saves alot of downtime......

As for blowing a solenoid just because the the key is on while charging, I have no idea.... I thought the solenoid only energized when the pedal was depressed and the shifter was in gear? If the solenoid isn't energized, how can it blow?
