Default Charging 8v battery with 12 volt charger?

Can I charge a dead 8v battery with a 12v car charger?

I wouldn't... although you can charge two at a time with a twelve volt charger enough to allow the regular charger to turn on if they've been sitting for a while and gone completely dead.

Is only 1 battery dead, or is this a more generic question?

Go ahead. Momentary applying a higher voltage to a battery can help clean the lead plate surface so that it will be more receptive to charging.
Leave the the caps off and then apply the 12v charger voltage, allow the battery to perk/bubble for a time then let the battery rest then reapply the 12V again. Use a voltmeter to check the battery voltage periodically with the 12V charger disconnected, of course. Check that the voltage is increasing toward the optimum 8.49v. Maintain the water level.
You cannot leave the battery unattended with the 12v charger connected for this procedure!
When you use the 'quick charge' setting on a charger, isn't that applying a higher voltage?
Good luck!

Also, if the charger has amperage settings use the lowest setting available (4 amps?).

I'm just basing my assumption that the entire pack is dead... If it's only one, you need to determine why that battery is out of sync with the rest. Do you have an accessory hooked to that battery alone? If not, I'd replace it if the other 5 are fine. It's obviously bad and not worth the hassle to try and revive it.
