motor terminals getting hot?
Just how hot should the wire terminals get on a 94 36v motor? Warm to the touch or hot enough that you can't leave your finger there?
Thanks Lee |

Re: motor terminals getting hot?
Is it a resistor car or one with a controller? does it have a back seat? is it lifted? Are you in a hilly area? Just some info you need to share with us.

Re: motor terminals getting hot?
Really it would depend on many factors at the time of checking? Were your batterys fully charged or below 50%? How far and how fast had you gone? How heavy are your cables? Were you carrying extra weight ( 4 people )? What kind of terrain were you driving on? You can see that the above and more has some thing to do with heat.
NORMALLY HIGH HEAT ( finger blisters ) at a particular location ( cables or connections at motor ) means poor connections, high internal resistance or in your case possibly motor problem? Are you having problems with your cart ( lack of power, slow running etc ) or was this just a random test you did? Please advise. |

Re: motor terminals getting hot?
It is only one terminal, looking at the motor from under the seat it is the very top connection. It is a controller cart. The batts are good and fully charged, wires seem good and it will get hot "almost blister" within minutes over flat ground w/ one person in the cart. It does have 22" tires. This is a used motor I just got, the other motor had a terminal "different one" loose connection on the post going to the windings. I was planning on having it fixed as a back up.
I have noticed that this motor does not make a noise like my old one did when you go down a hill or let of the pedal. Lee |

Re: motor terminals getting hot?
when you installed the motor, and hooked your cables up to the motor did you use one wrench or two wrenches to tighten the nuts on the cables that hook to the motor???

Re: motor terminals getting hot?
2 wrenches, all connections are good. The loose connection must be on the other side of the post. The wire itself just gets barely warm but the post on the motor is getting hot. I guess the connection to the wire for the brushes is going bad and creating alot of resistance. I am going to pull the motor and take it back to the shop I bought it from. We can pull it apart there to check for any problems,I don't want him to blame me for messing it up.

Re: motor terminals getting hot?
You said it was a used motor, so unfortunately, while you did the right thing and used 2 wrenches, there is no telling what the person that removed it did. Likely as not, they used an air wrench and quickly spun the nut off without bothering to use a wrench to hold the second nut and spun the connection internally.
