Anyone rebuilt a 36v GE motor?

Hello. I want to rebuild the 36v GE motor in my 1971 Caroche. I have no continuity between S1 and S2. Anyone able to offer any wisdom and guidance? Thanks, Larry

Have you disassembled it yet to see what the problem is?

Not yet. I just tested it so far: Continuity between A1 &A2, No continuity between S1 & S2, No cont. between A1 & S1/S2, No cont. between A2 & S1/S2. I'm gonna try to take it apart tomorrow. Anything I need to watch out for during disassembly? Thanks for the quick response!

There will be a lot of carbon so be prepared for a dirty mess. Look for a broken connection be tween one S post and the field you may be able to repair this if that's the case. Usually somebody spins the stud and breaks the connection...... Pay attention to the placement of rubber bumpers at the stud and case connection and the placement of fasteners in the tail piece. I just bought this cart and there is a new cable between S2 and the resistor coil. I'd be willing to wager that I'll find a broken connection on the back of S2. I'll find out tomorrow. Thanks

Unless you use 2 wrenches it is quite possible to spin the stud and break the connection inside.... usually it can be re-soldered.

My '86 had aluminum windings in it and the ends had to be replaced with short pieces of copper to attach to the studs. Had it done over a year ago and it still runs great.

As stated earlier, more than likely the studs spun and broke a connection. Its pretty easy to get apart and you should see the break. A propane torch and solder should be able to fix it.

Ok. I got the motor out (harder than expected) and apart (easier than expected) and the wire was burned off the back of S2. Should this be professionally soldered? I'm concerned about overheating the insulator between the stud and case. I'm also concerned about a poor connection and having to fix it again.
