Default Lester-Matic 36V charger needle in green

Just joined - Glad to be on board. I just bought a 95 36V cart. The boy who owned it put 5 - 8volt batteries, 5 months old. When I charge the batteries, the needle on the charger meter never moves out of the green box... What is going on/ Am I not charging it long enough? The meter indicates up to 30 amps.

Welcome to bgw

You say you got a 95 36v cart with 5- 8volt batteries , WHAT

ok what cart are we talking about, and make sure what batteries it has in it

If it's a 36v cart it takes 6--6 volt batteries, not 5--8volt

I am not positive that it is a 95, but the frame and electrics are early 90's. The boy before me told me he put a different plastic body on the frame. The batteries are US Battery(name on battery), 8 volt GC, deep cycle; red top w/white case. Why he put those in the cart is unknown to me. My question is still " Why does the meter needle on the charger never move into the AMP area during or after a charge?" I know it is charging - the box is buzzing. Thanx again for your help.

You need to post the serial number of the cart so we can further assist you, the batteries you have plus charger = NO Charge, just cause box is buzzing doesn't mean it is.

You need to sort out a few questions here.....

Is the cart a 36v cart? Do you have a voltmeter to check if in fact the charger is putting out a charge?
NO cart uses 5 8v batteries. Does the cart have a row of coils or solenoids behind the batteries? Lets try to sort this out?
You will need a DVM(digital volt meter)

The charger you have wont normally charge a full 30 amps, more like 15-20 amps when hooked to a correct battery pack. With a 36 volt charger trying to charge a 40 volt pack ( first of all you would NEVER GET BATTERYS FULLY CHARGED ) and this strange set up may have damaged the charger to the point of only putting out a few amps, or because of higher than normal resistance ( 5 extra cells ) can't charge above a few amps ( green scale )? I have never charged a 40 volt pack with 36 volt charger so am not sure what happens BUT on the few times that I have charged a 8 volt battery with a 12 volt charger it charges at a high amps and charger and battery gets very hot and must be shortening charger life?
Sounds like former owner was trying to give the cart a boost or didnt count cells ( this happens ) and all he has done is cause problems?

Are you talking about the VIN number? Or is there a serial number somewhere on the frame or motor? Please bare with me... I am totally new at this - I bought the cart a week ago and already feel overwhelmed by the purchase, the problems and my ignorance to the workings of electric carts. I will go and take some pics of the coils, batteries and "under seat" electrics and post them up directly.

Many Thanks to everybody for helping me out... I am very grateful to you all!!!
