"Toe In/Out" - One man job...??

Ok for all you guys with lift kits etc…”Can One Man Do A GOOD Job On Setting The Toe” … it all seem straight forward but what the secret on front the back tire measurement:
Where am I missing the trick???
-Point the tires forward …. Assuming the steering wheel is at TDC ….
-Put a chalk mark in the center of the left tire …
-with a straight ruler measure from the left mark out (say 36”) and put a second chalk mark on the right tire …
-Roll the cart 1.5 turns back now measure your chalk mark that was 36” …the different is what you have to work out to get the front and back measurement within 1/8 inch...
Now my question is...how can ONE MAN do the back side measurement without putting himself in danger… on the left side...Thumb tack...glues it on …or …What’s the secret…??

I start by jacking up front end and mark with chalk the center line of tread while spinning each tire, then after centering steering wheel straight ahead, I drop front end and move cart back and forth about 10' to equalize suspension, then I have a piece of 3/4" X 5" X 48" board, drilled a hole centered on one end about 1" in from end to fit tight a number 4 spike, then on other end I sawed a slot about 10" long so another number 4 spike can be moved back and forth and when behind tires measure to center of tread. I mark with pencil the spike location on board and then switch to front and check the difference. This keeps me out from under cart and I can even do measurements while on my handicaped scooter.

I just take a couple of straight pins and stick them into the thickest tread near the center of each tire and measure the distance then I rotate them 180 and take another measurement. I do the same on my auto's. Ive done front end alignments on my cars for years and have no problems. .......Well it's more involved than this.... but really, ....it is about that simple.

I unhook the steering and center the wheels and then loosen the tie rod jam nuts on the center bar. take a back measurement from center to center and then the same on the front.I also mark the tie center with a silver sharpie.I then adjust the back bar until the front cenetr tows in 1/8 inch and then lock it all down. I then adjust the steering arm to fit with the steering wheel straight. I do about 2 of these a week.

I have two 3' pieces of square tubing. I remove the front tires, clamp the sq. tubing to each wheel hub about half way of the tubing so I have almost equal amounts in front and behind the wheels. I then measure out on the ends from one side to the other and make my adjustments accordingly. You have a greater success rate of getting it dead on when you give yourself more than just the diameter of the tire to take your measurements from.

This is also the way I make my adjustments on the Jeep.
