6 8volts or 4 12 volts
I was looking at replacing my older 8 volts with 4 heavy duty Cat 12 volts. Is this possible? I have a D&D high tourque motor with a 8 inch lift so I was looking for some more battery juice and the 8d Cat batteries are great, I know I have to retrofit the tray but before I do it I would like your opinions!

6 8v are going to have more juice than 4 12v but even better would be 8 6v if you are looking for more run time.
Now if you are looking for more power then you could step up to 72v. I hope this helps. p.s. are the cat batteries even deep cycle? there is a huge difference in starting batteries vs. deep cycle batteries. Cheers Galloway |

hmmm all I saw on the website was 12v deep cycle marine battery one rated at 55 amp hr and the other was 80 amp hr @20hr rate.

The cat batteries I was looking at were not deep cycle so I guess they wouldnt be the best option. If I go to 8 6volt batteries would i lose power but gain run time? I need the best combo for run time and power.

those cat batts will be useless for you.........i would go with six 8 volt batts i,m not sure cost wise if the eight 6 volts are worth it and thats not including where your gonna put them as they are the same size so you,ll have to modify something to get them in there somewhere.........................

Please when asking for help from forum give make, model, year and voltage to help get correct info fast. From your post I assume that its a Club Car? Go with ( 8 ) 6 volt batterys if you want to gain run time. That along with minimum 4 gauge welding multi strand cable will help alot. Put extra batterys in golf bag well for short cable runs, and go HD F&R switch.

Old Mec, it is a club car 48 volt sorry about that, I added the alltrax 500 controller so I do have the larger cables, I think im just going to stick with the 6 8volts. Batteries plus has a decent 8 volt battery thats about 50 less per battery then the trojans so I will probably go with that unless you know of a good cheaper battery!

When you talk about cheap batterys thats exactly what you will get ( "CHEAP PRICE" ) with lousy life and lousy short range power as well. You have a high torque motor drawing high amps, a 500 amp Alltrax controller, HD cables, 8" lift kit, larger tires and maybe a rear seat that all take away from what you want you want, MORE POWER AND RANGE RIGHT? You have invested all this money to get what you want out of your cart CORRECT? SO LETS SAY just as an example you built a race car up with special racing wheels and tires, multi speed tranny, HD clutch, disc brakes, geared differential, foiler, lowered, etc all set up for power and speed RIGHT? Now for power you use a 4 cylinder engine with a govenor so you cant turn rpm's above 1800 and what do you have except a tough looking lead sled? By going with cheap quality batterys this is what you are doing to a great cart. A cheap battery has less LEAD so less power and life? LEAD is the ENGINE of a battery so pick up a quality battery and see how heavy they are, then pick up a cheap battery and compare weight, every ounce less means less power and range? Many batterys now days are just RENTAL QUALITY this is my term ( by that I mean that you will be replacing them OFTEN under warrentee ) with fees attached that soon begins looking like rent? Along with that you will have batterys of different age and they will each require a different charge so newest batterys will be ruined by boiled while charger is trying to charge older weaker batterys? Low amp rated batterys are the way to ruin your motor, controller as HEAT IS THE ENEMY THAT KILLS DC PARTS?
The PERFECT BATTERY PACK should have all same build date, month and year ( look on post ) highest quality with highest amp hour rating, battery built for golf carts, NEV, etc, not a starter battery or deap cycle marine battery which are NOT MADE for continues high amp draws. Look in the STICKIES ABOVE for "GOLF CART BATTERY COMPARISON" for some ideas. I have 8 year old Trojan batterys in my cart that are still gong strong even though I have lots of extra weight body wise. Try that with a cheap battery and see how long they last? |
