Wonder if I should not drive cart till repair
Hi All,
I recently got a used ClubCar DS 2001 48V. Think it is a standard cart. A friend made me a little 'trailer hitch' for the cart and I was using it to move things on a rather hilly area. I think that I overloaded the trailer and my ClubCar - it slowed to total stop and other person in cart got out to help reduce weight and push it a bit - cart started back, but then was 'stinking' some, but continued to work fine. Later after taking trailer off I went back up this hill and ClubCar made it fine but sort of had electrical smell again. Any ideas if it is okay to continue to use? Any ideas of what I might have done or if I have permanently damaged? New to electric golf carts so any thoughts appreciated! kim |

Re: Wonder if I should not drive cart till repair
Kim, Welcome to BGW!
There's an old saying: If it smells like electrical, it's electrical. Your cart is overheating SOMEWHERE, and continued use will show you where. Now, you could run it till it fails, but the failure could cause damage to other components, or even lead to a fire. That battery pack contains an incredible amount of energy and needs to be respected. Let the cart cool down for a few hours, then inspect all components and connections for signs of heat damage. DO NOT OPERATE THE CART until you know what's going on. |

Re: Wonder if I should not drive cart till repair
Gomoman -- Thanks so much for your advice. I started looking and it is the oddest thing. It seems that the red cable heading off to the controller I guess was 'loose' on the terminal - the nut doesn't seem to quite fit right and maybe had been crossthreaded or something - not sure -but the wires are lose and the post is almost melted away ... just a bit of metal holding in on. I wonder if that can be repaired or if I have to buy a new battery? Likely with the big load I was drawing a lot of amps through there and it melted because the connection wasn't tight? So - should I get the battery replaced and just see how it goes from there? I might call a place called battery doctor as I have heard that if you change one battery you should change them all -maybe they can fix the post - hopefully!
Thanks for advice on this - does my plan sound okay?? kim |

You are overworking the car, sounds like you are burning the controller. Its just a matter of time before you finish it.

Yes you can repair the battery-click on the link
You need to check all your cables to make sure they are clean and tight, and that cart was not made to pull a heavy load up a hill till it stops like that http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/batte...nal-repair.php ' ' ' ' ' ' ' |

Re: Wonder if I should not drive cart till repair
batteries are Trojans - not sure of the model number, will need to check. the cart in general seemed to have a lot of power and i have pulled other things with it with no problem but perhaps i shouldn't use it this way at all? i have it on a water-access only island and use to run between places on my property and to move things about. several other neighbors use similar carts in similar ways- but perhaps i should not use it this way. how would i know if the only problem is a battery problem, or if there is other damage? i did find a local battery doctor that will put an 'automotive post' on and then a marine adapter to give me a post to put connectors on. thanks for the link to repair site, but maybe a bit more complicated than i am ready for - don't have a tap set and don't want to screw up the battery (already done enough damage!).
again - thank you all for your assistance - first electric cart i have owned |

you might want to check all your other cables while your at it look for any that look burnt arount the connections thats a good indication of a lot of heat there for some reason.......................................
