buying sams club cheaper batteries
I'm facing replacing all 6 of my 8 volt trojan batteries in my 2002 club car with regen controller system. It is refusing to take a full charge, even after 16 hrs. of charging it only goes down to 8. The surface charge only last a few minutes and then it won't even pull a semi-steep hill. So anyway, I haven't had an electric before and when I started pricing out deep cycle golf cart batteries it was scary, I use mine at the campground for fun. I can purchase 8 volt energizers from Sams Club for $79.82 each, but they are only rated: 105 AH though they claim to run 110 minutes. I know most other batteries have larger amp hour ratings. Like to save money and get through a couple of years here but don't want to make a bad decision on purchase. Anyone with any thoughts or advice out there on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks tinkerman

Thanks "old mec" I read your post and that is kinda what I was thinking too. I don't want to throw good money after bad. I may do some more checking around." Batteries Plus" has a pretty good one for $114. each that is at least 165 AH rated that I'm leaning toward. Thanks again. Tinkerman

Re: buying sams club cheaper batteries
Several here have turned to the Sam's Club battery. Gorno has ... with both of his carts and is very pleased with them. I went with the Sam's club because they have the same specs as the Trojan, just a few hundred dollars less expensive when buying 6 or 8 at a time. "They will all last a long time with proper maintenance". I wouldn't call them cheap. They are more than likely produced on the same assembly line in Mexico as the Trojans, although I don't know that for sure. The website states they are mfr'd in CA and GA, but still would have to see them flowing along the assembly line. They might be made in Mexico and the date stamp is added here in the good ole USA. Hey, someone has to pay for the name pasted to the side of them.
Time will tell whether or not I purchase another set when these die, but hopefully, that will be in 5 - 6 years. At least they are made on land "connected" to ours, and that is fading fast too. But, the decision is ultimately yours. It's your money and your cart. Good luck with whatever you choose. |

Re: buying sams club cheaper batteries
I have 6x2004 Trojans in my cart and 6x2002 Sam's Club Energizers in my boat and both are still holding up well.
My next cart change will likely get Energizers, a 40% price difference is just too much to ignore. As everyone will reiterate, maintenance is the key to long life. |

Re: buying sams club cheaper batteries
I have older TROJANS that are rated same as # T-890 which is 190 amp hour rated and weigh in at 69 LBS. You are getting near mid range amp hour rating with 165 ( TROJAN T-875 rated at 170 with weight of 63 LBS ). If you want to compare try lifting the 165 amp hour battery and if available then lift a T-875 TROJAN? If you have hills to climb now would be a good time to replace ( ALL 6 GUAGE WIRING ) with 4 guage electric welding highest count multi strand cable available.
Remember to break in batterys correctly to improve life and performance. #1 Charge batterys AFTER INSTALLATION AND BEFORE DRIVING CART until charger turns off on its own. DO NOT interupt by unhooking before charger completion. Yes they will boil some. #2 Charge batterys after each use even if only driven for a few minutes. #3 Try and do short runs, not much wide open throttle and hill climbing at first. #4 NEVER DRAW BATTERYS BELOW 80% of charge until after 20-30 charge cycles MINIMUM. #5 ALWAYS check water level ( AFTER CHARGING ) and dont fill more than a 1/4" to 1/2" above plates with ( DISTILLED WATER ONLY ). #6 Clean batterys outsides with soft brush, water and baking soda ( BEWARE DONT ALLOW INTO CELLS ) often and keep case dry. #7 SEAL cable connections with spray type anti corrode material available in any auto parts store. |

Re: buying sams club cheaper batteries
Wow there is alot of good battery care info here and also after reading your replys, I'm thinking why not save some money then....and go with the less costly Sams Club batteries. From your posts, sounds like I really could get some good usage out of them as long as I properly maintane them....with proper charging and distilled water levels. Thanks again everyone. Can't wait to get to Sams and pick up my new batteries, it should run a whole lot better, only have one fairly long hill I have to climb up with it after I put my boat in at campground and it is paved up to my camper, just refuses to do it right now. Thanks again. Tinkerman

Re: buying sams club cheaper batteries
Tinker, I put the sams energizers in mine almost a year ago and have had no problems with them, it all comes down to how you take care of them. But for the cost savings they are worth it to me.

Re: buying sams club cheaper batteries
it all boils down to you.........make certain you break them in right and after that do bi-monthly maintence on them .................if you keep on top of them you,ll get 4 to 6 years no problems but if you just throw them in and forget about them you,ll be buying another set in a year...........its proper break in which most people don,t even know about and than maintence..................................

Re: buying sams club cheaper batteries
Thanks for all the good advice given here, I feel much more confident about buying the Sams club energizers now, and I will be sure to charge them fully before I use them. I will be picking them up next Monday and I'll leave feedback on them after I have installed them and fully charged them. I'm really looking forward to getting them now. I know energizer batteries for other things have held up very well, so Back to you all in a few days. Tinkerman
