Running real slow and lurching
My nephew's Club Car, IQ 48v #AQ0529is running awful. Yesterday, in an effort to make it run better the batteries were replaced. From Sam's Club. Charged all night long. The cables are decent although I plan to replace them anyway. So.... with new batteries and tight cables the cart just barely goes at all. Maybe 2 to 4 mph but jumpy. It's like someone was intentionally moving the accelerator pedal wildly as you go across the yard at 4mph. Most of the lurching is sort of weak with an occasional bigger burst of power. It also does this in reverse.
What should I do to diagnose this thing? I do have access to an identical model Club Car. If needed I could probably switch a component although I would rather not if there is another way. Anybody got ideas? Thanks |

Re: Running real slow and lurching
Make sure all the batteries are wired in series. Check the voltage on each batt

if they were sam,s club batts make sure they gave you 8 volt batts and not 6 volt have this happen dozens of times with sams club they give you the wrong ones....................................

Re: Running real slow and lurching
When all else checks out check the MCOR output with a DVM

Re: Running real slow and lurching
They all look like 8 volt batteries. At least they all have 4 caps each. I plan to go over there today and check voltages. It should have been charging all night again so it should be charged completely.
I have a digital volt meter. What am I looking for on the MCOR. Can you be more specific please. |

Re: Running real slow and lurching
Update:
I checked the batteries after the first charge was complete. Pack voltage is 51.5volts. Each individual battery measures exactly 8.5volts. Cart drives the same. It feels like it doesn't do anything for about the first 4 inches of accelerator travel. I will check MCOR linkage tomorrow. How do I check the MCOR output with the DVM as suggested by Scottyb? Thanks |

Re: Running real slow and lurching
I dunno if this made it into the stickies yet? But your problem sounds like throttle input rather than batteries....... you did check all the cable connections?

I'll be checking the MCOR tomorrow. Thanks, I'll let you know the results.

Re: Running real slow and lurching
Another update:
OK, I did not do a DVM test on the MCOR yet but here's what I did and the results. As I said in the previous posts the batteries are new and fully charged but the cables were marginal with one of them quite bad on one end. Today I made a set of cables with 2 gauge high quality copper welding cable. I double crimped then soldered the 2 gauge solid copper 5/16" connectors. Each end was taped with high quality electrical tape for corrosion resistance and then covered with heat shrink tubing to protect the tape seal. I used all stainless steel nuts to connect the new cables. The cable that runs through a hole from the battery compartment to the rear compartment only fits through the hole without the connector so I had to install that connector after the cable was in place............................................. . With every new cable in place here's where it gets kinda strange. First test run of about 15ft backing it up was slow and not very encouraging. Next, I went forward and I made it about 15 feet slow and jerky and then it it just stopped dead. Nothing in forward or reverse although the reverse alarm was sounding like it should. So for some reason, with my left foot, I just gave the cart a little push backward while adding some throttle in reverse. The cart motor gave a funny little sound and came back to life and has run better than it ever has before. It has good power and speed like the other identical cart my brother has and runs as good as my Yamaha G-19. Is it possible to have something in the motor that could affect it in that manner? This cart has gone through some mud holes but none recently. It's been over 100 degrees F here for some time. Can the sensor on the end of the motor get dirty or wet and freak out? The MCOR shaft also has that weird problem of just barely moving at all even with the peddle depressed all the way so a put a spacer on the linkage and that gave me pretty good response. |
