Default How to check for a bad cell?

What's the best way to find out if I have a bad cell in one of my batteries?

A reading from a decent hydrometer should be used to compare that cell to the others.

That's what I was thinking, just the cheap plastic one's i'm guessing. I just didn't know if there was a better hydrometer out there.

Next question, who has a 8 volt hydrometer?

I bought a walmart one with the floating balls - it's a piece of crap. I saw a decent one at auto parts store and it was only 5 bucks. Get a decent one.

Hydrometers are not voltage specific. Do not buy a floating ball hydrometer, they are crap.

To do a correct cell check requires a ( single float hydrometer with temperature scale to correct readings for temperature) . These are avalable from any auto parts store.
DO NOT GET A MULTI FLOAT as they are only good for antifreeze testing, and yes are not even that correct for antifreeze? Go to STICKIES under heading "State Of Charge Readings" and compare each cell against what readings you get. More than 5% points difference means a weak cell that will not take a full charge.
NOTE hydrometer reading can only be taken after waiting ONE HOUR after batterys have been on charger. In the case of adding distilled water it requires a full charge to mix fluids and then again wait one hour.

You dont have to wait to take hydrometer readings, straight off the charger is fine.

FIXEROFCARTS-- I may be ( AM ) very old school on batterys as I had been trained on OLD STYLE HARD CASE BATTERYS with replaceable cells to check batterys with the one hour wait and through the years have confirmed that when checking for a ( WEAK CELL and NOT TOTAL CHARGE ) that the one hour wait will give more accurate cell readings. A new or good condition battery wont make as much of a difference, but still you see a drop by waiting even though ALL cells remain even confirming good battery? This seems to confirm for me what I call "EQUALIZATION OF CELLS", this is my term and may be a incorrect term in modern battery technology but sounds good to me and fits? The term has nothing to do with a equalization charge recommended by Trojan and others where you test cells every hour while charging to get to maximum rise in specific gravity.
I hope this clarifies why I recommend waiting to people that dont know that much about batterys and want to have information on good to weak celled batterys?

Take readings immediately off the charger and also wait an hour for confirmation. Interesting to know if there is a notable difference.
