96 club car ele. no go

we have a 96 club car that was runnin just fine the other day and now just quit? Its a 48v im guessing ig car? serial # A9637-526228. We were going across the field on the farm and stop to get off, when we got back on no go. my question is? when you turn the key switch on should you ALWAYS hear the solenoid click? if so I dont. sometimes it does sometime not. How would I go about checking it out? I am a mechnic by trade but kinda new to carts. Should I have system voltage at both soleniods? it does have 2. or what. This cart does have a rocker switch any help is appreciated

96 reagan, have you tried charging it and does charger work? start with basics age of batts, condition ,.water level, after a full charge let it sit an hour and while its sitting go over all cables make sure they are tight and connections clean....grab pull twist cables don,t just look at them........than with a voltagemeter check your voltage on each batt........you would like 8.5 per batt. or a pack reading of 55 or better.......if ok than load test them, if ok jack rear of cart up you want the soleniod on the outer frame rail the one on the inner is for the reagan braking system.....................get a peice of 6 gage cable and put 1 end on large post of soleniod and other end on other large post, turn key on put in gear and press pedal if cart starts running replace.......if thats your problem replace it with a white/rodgers HD 48 volt soleniod don,t buy one of those albrights.......just my opinion, post what you find or your results so we know where to go next if we have to.......................

Thanks Tom I wll try that stuff in the morning I did check the entire pack briefly I think it had 50.8 but ill check again tomarrow

ok I hooked up charger and its working fine, checked all battery connections all ok as well, water ok, jumped solenoid and now were off (knowledge is a wonderful thing) sooo now how do you tell the difference between a white/brother and a albright solenoid?

Albright and White Rogers are brand names of solenoids and what you want is a White Rogers Model #586 with 48 volt coil, silver contacts, and if still avaliable manufactured in Mexico, single pole normally open contacts. Along with solenoid you SHOULD install the following for stock amp controller a new Diode ( 1N4004 1 amp ) across small terminals and a new precharged resistor ( 48 volt-470 Ohm-10 watt ) across large terminals of solenoid. All available from CC dealers for modist amounts and needed to protect controller.

the albright is black plastic and kinda squarish looking it has the resistor and diode built in i have to just say i have had such bad luck with them i just had to quit buying them..........make sure when you put diode on silver band goes towards positive on solenoid.......thanks for posting results.......................

Thanks men I just got the cart up & running again the white/rodgers was the trick but the old one didnot have a diode or resistor do I really need one? The controller has been replaced about a year ago but up till now all was good

By NOT adding Diode and resistor could possibly be the reason that the solenoid went out in first place?
"The DIODE is there to protect from high voltage ( more than 150 volts ) surge when field coil inside solenoid is turned off". "The precharged resistor is there to precharge the filter capacitors built into the controller. This reduces the arcing across contacts as they close". These quotes are from the ALLTRAX Tech Note #010.
So they are very important to life of you control system. Some Solenoids come with these function included inside unit but WR 586 does not.

NO Club Car can stock with both. Club Car factory part numbers for 1995-2005
Diode # 1014948, Pre Charge resistor # 1014947
