fried third v glide
hello first post here.
my brother was given a older model cc 36v with v glide and the coils. his company had given it to him after the batteries died. he scratch around and found a couple new batteries and tested the old ones that seemed ok. here is my situation. while spraying round up carrying three people and going up and down a ditch banks the v glide caught on fire. it completely melted the wiper and part of the vglide. i went to purchase a new on and after paying 230 for it guy behind the counter said you should not be running large tires and caring to much load. my brother installed the part and had it working, weeks later his kids playing in the yard saw smoke coming from v glide and called us. it didn't melt the wiper brush however it did melt the wire of the back of the brush. the v glide wasn't damage. just some minor parts. we fixed this and had it running around the farm. after climbing one hill with two people we smelled smoke. after inspection the wiper was completely melted away. each time 230 second 56 third 90. i will give you more detailed about the cart. 90% of the wires SEEM to small and have crappy connector holding wire together. as i have messed with high power car stereo and with high power RC i understand its important to have good connection. here's my plan again money is tight so looking for the cheapest way : 1 we will fix connector ,replace to smaller gauger if we can some around shop. replace connector's with solder type and inspect coils for correct contact again if money was not a problem we would buy newer 48v ss so question is has any one installed a high amp breaker to stop from this happening. i know its easy to say don't drive it so ruff but 3 set kids and 8 nephews and sister easier said does any one know the amp draw on 36 v with little bigger tire. i did find this and seems it could work take a look and let me know, http://www.lesscoelectronics.com/Cir...%20breaker.htm would 200 be enough for stock v glide i really like the idea of having breaker for this setup. i know they make the for trolling motor setups just wasnt sure what amp breaker we would need. a fuse is kinda out do they are to expensive thanks in advance russ |

Re: fried third v glide
Welcome to BGW
I dont think a breaker is going to help you, the v-glide isn't shorting out. WHat is happening is whomever is riding it isn't going wide open....when its wide open the coils are out of the circuit. At lower speeds things tend to heat up. Coils heat up and anything else. They say not to upgrade them to 48 volts but people still do it, I personally have never done it. The ONLY trouble I've ever had from a resistor system is when going slow.....and things heat up and burn. If you start upgrading things it'll find the weak link wherever it is. The best thing you can do is upgrade to an electronic controller and enjoy lows speeds without fear of red hot coils along with better run times....of coarse thats probly not in the budget but if you keep burning coils and v-glides it can quickly cost more than a conversion. |

Re: fried third v glide
Their minimum shipping was 7.40 so it came to $28.00 ... you can find a 250 amp fuse at any auto parts house that you connect between the battery pack and the cart for like $5.

Re: fried third v glide
I Agree the 36 volt resistor car cant do much and a load of any kind is trouble.Do yourself a favor a go to a 48 volt car and put your troubles at ease.

Re: fried third v glide
My EZGO resistor cart has a housing/shield around the resistors. I opened the front end of the housing and mounted a small 12v fan to force air across the resistors and out the back of the housing. As Roady89 suggests 'pedal to the medal' as much as possible to remove the resistors from the circuit.

Re: fried third v glide
thanks for the replies. however like i said this is down to a very small budget. however what i know now after the first one fired i would have upgraded to newer stye. but money is out as we have dumped coins into a bucket with a hole in the bottem.
i know the coild heats up as that what they are intended to do (waste of energy ) howerver without wanting to spend 50 more or just junk it. TRUST ME NOT A GOOD IDEAD. on nearly 5 acre this is the best baby siters a group of kids could have slow safe and its fun for them. heck i grew up on three whellers and i loved it so i know how much the like it. back to the point i know the coils heat up. hower the vglide is causeing the problems and extremley over amp and is melting the arms and the v glide case. i breaker or even a $5 fuse would seem to solve my problem. i just need to know what size to get. what is the v glide rated for 200-300 amps ? |

Re: fried third v glide
The battery pack will easily put that out... there is no rating that I have ever heard on the V glide.... would go out and buy a 150 and 200 amp fuse and see where that gets you?

Re: fried third v glide
Nah, they wont pull that much under normal load. I've seen figures around 50-60 amps moving just cruising....BUT at startup they can get on up there in the couple hundred range. Alltrax provides a 200 amp fuse with their controllers...that would probly be good enough. That being said, since nothing is "shorting out" I can't see a fuse or breaker doing any good.....but, its your baby. A lot of times if a connection to a coil is bad or a broken coil they'll cause problems at the v-glide but I dont think thats the problem. Its just the nature of the best that is a resistor v-glide.
