Adding Another Battery

Ok im running a 04 CC 48 volt system W/ 4-12 volt batteries, 500 AMP Alltrax controller, 400 Amp Solenoid, 2 Gauge wires, Stock motor. I get 51 Volts after a full charge, im wanting to add a 6 volt battery in series to get somewhere around 57 or 58 volts on a full charge. Im looking for a switch of some kind that would allow me to add the extra 6 volt battery without unhooking wires all the time.... Example to charge, race or everyday driving i wouldnt want the 6 volt battery in the loop. I just dont know what kind of switch or block needed for this application. Any suggestions???

Yes, your batteries are going bad and you need a new set.

How do you figure his batteries are going bad? 51v is 100% according to the state of charge list in the stickies. Besides he was asking how to put and extra battery in line with what he has with a switch to take it out of the loop without unwiring it all the time.
Not trying to mouthy just wanting to know what is the full charge on 48v batteries. I read in the stickies that just shy of 51v is 100% charge and yet read others saying 56v should be 100%. Best I`ve ever had on a new set of batteries is a little over 51v fully charged. May hit 60v while being charged but that is only while the charger is on.

Sry i should of said in the first post, my 4 12 volt batteries are brand new. Like 2 weeks old, When i pulled them off the charger today they were around 53.5 Volts then settled into about 52.4. Im sure it would of kept going down.

I'm sure you thought of this but after doing all that you did... why not just get a PlumQuick motor to take your cart to the 26mph mark instead of trying to boost your voltage a bit with an extra battery? Motors are around $225...

Also... GolfCarFixer knows his stuff so he must have been reviewing a different thread or just misread the original post... or was Toasted at the time!!! He has helped many folks here on BGW

KRC15 Have you looked at marine batterys switches? Some might have a function like you want as they come in HD for multy battery packs and different pack isolaton?
SCUBABUD is right if you want more out of your cart a Plum Quick motor could be the answer to your needs? I really think the addition of a 6 volt battery in series with 12 volt batterys will do damage to either or both voltage batterys, much less what possible damage could be done to your new ALLTRAX? I would contact ALLTRAX direct befor etrying anything like that?? I dont know if its possible to replace your stock motor with a older style 36 volt motor, but in older 48 volt Club cars its like adding a super charger, or a Plum Quick?
I'm sure you are aware that Club car has stopped using 12 volt batterys and has a replacement kit to convert to 8 volt batterys. This gives more range, power and battery life which is a real plus.
I guess I look at power-speed from a different angle than most as I want max Amp Hour Rated Batterys? Example 4-12 volt Trojan T1275 batterys have total amp hour rating of 600, each battery has 150 amp hour rating, while 6-8 volt Trojan T890 have total amp hour rating of 1140, each battery has 190 amp hour rating?

I have talked to plum quick, and have a aftermarket shunt wound motor on order with robby. I was going to go with the bandit but wanted more speed so i opted for the aftermarket. Robby has been great to work with, He is actually the one that told me to put the extra 6 volt battery in. Hopefully with the new motor from plum quick and the little extras i have done i can reach 35 mph.

Also I contacted Alltrax about my battery question, they told me the controller is set to receive a max of 60 volts, just stay under that and it wont shut off. The conversation i had with them was brief, not sure they really liked my question.


So last night I put in the battery for a total of 59 to 58.5 volts fully charged, with the controller set on 10 acceleration, turbo mode, the front tire WILL pop a wheelie, not much on one but it still does. Man was i impressed, I was unable to get a top speed reading - but will do today. I will be posting results with the new top speed.

I'm not surprised that ALLTRAX limits the voltage on their controllers. You might want to consider having a controller designed for max input of 72 volts to be sure of reasonable life. They put out a quality product but really can not control what purchaser does with it? It would be like a auto body shop doing a paint job and customer taking it home and cleaning it with sand paper instead of a cloth? When fully charged your pack and extra battery should run closer to 60-65 volts for a short time before dropping off?
The marine switches I was talking about are spark proof which is good with batterys gassing off after heavy usage. ( Hydrogen goes BOOOOM )

Yea I know he knows his stuff...Thats why I was a little confused when he stated he needed new batteries......
