48v Charging Problem
I've got a 48v DS Car. Just put new Crown 165's in. I put the initial charge into them no problem. When charger shut off, my charge meter was reading full. I've run them down to about 49.3 volts, around 65% I believe. Now my charger is coming on when I plug it up, running up to about 14amps, dropping down a couple amps over about a 2 minute period and then shutting completely off. Any ideas?
more info: I just bought the digital handheld Voltage meter today, so I didn't get a reading after the initial charge, but the on board gauge had them at a full charge and is in line with the 60-70% charge state. |

Re: 48v Charging Problem
Remember you are breaking in new batterys and this takes 20-30 charge cycles or more depending on charger, OBC and batterys themselves. They will not perform like new until this period is over and I am sure you will start to notice the difference as time goes along? Remember to check distilled water level after charging to maintain as new batterys some times use more than after broke in? Wondering what 20 amp hour rated your Crown batterys are as this enters into charge period?
NEVER RUN BATTERYS BELOW 70% until after break in period is over and charge batterys after each use regardless how short it may be. ALWAYS let charger shut off on its own each time and for awhile digitally check each batterys after charging and after waiting for one hour to allow batterys to level off. SEE STICKIES "State Of Charge Readings" to confirm charge conditions. I would depend on your hand held digital meter more than a dash mounted unit that is good to give some indication of pack voltage but not that clear a picture unless its been adjusted to compare with quality hand held unit. |

Re: 48v Charging Problem
They are 165 at 20Hr Ah.
Thanks for the info. It pretty much backs up the advice I've gotten here and other places in the past and is the reason that I am ready to go into the second charge. As I stated, I've got them run down to 49.3v, so between 65 and 70% I believe. But my charger is not charging. It runs for a couple minutes and shuts off and the batteries remain at approximately 49.3. The charger is not overamping, it's simply cutting off and not coming back on. I have the 48v PowerDrive Charger, model #17930. Early thanks for any additional help, |

Re: 48v Charging Problem
I have the same charger and have found that for some reason unknown to me ( and I did ask Lester tec people about it and found no answer other than possible OBC problems ) that when I put ( new batterys ) in I had same problem until after 10 or so cycles of discharge-charge? Either it has to do with what the OBC feels or ?, but I tried to reboot OBC and it still was the same? I did not replace OBC because before I got my mind made up to change it out system settled down and gave full gravity-voltage readings.

Re: 48v Charging Problem
Based on that, what should I do? I don't want to run the batteries down past where they are now, but it won't charge either. Kind of a rock and hard place.
Some cart shop guy told me every time you unhook you batteries there is a 30% chance that the obc will go bad. Really???? I cant believe that, but I'm not an expert. Do you think it might be the obc? |

Re: 48v Charging Problem
Do you have some one around you that has a CC charger like yours that you could hook up and see if it continues to charge batterys higher or cuts off like yours? If it goes higher then I would look to OBC as the problem, but dont jump into about a $235.00?? unit unless you have to? Do tests first and then repair as really needed. There is a test for a OBC that wont turn charger on at all but that doesn't apply to your cart now.
From what you said it seems to maintain 49.3 so you would not be running batterys down only maintaining at that point. I would ignore anything that "cart guy" tells you as he sounds full of bull. OBC's do give some problems as they like many other electronics are NOT 100% trouble free and some models worse than others but a blanket statment like that IGNORE IT AND HIM. My own 1996 CC has been given heavy use since new and still has original OBC, and has thousands of hook ups since new and so far no problems except what I said about when I replaced batterys that one time. |

Re: 48v Charging Problem
i think the easiest thing might be to open up your charger and bypass the low voltage sensor and if charger works replace OBC............................

Re: 48v Charging Problem
SHADOWMAN Charger doess work only doesn't run until batterys full pack charged only to 49.3 volts total pack voltage. This is why he is looking for another charger to try and see if it will get up to full pack charge of 50.96.
