Question Precedent hot and ground behind dash?

Looking for a temporary 12v power source using wiring behind the dash. I still have my light kit hooked up using the 12v lead on batt4 through the factory harness. If I want to tap a 12v hot and a ground, what wires can I look for? I'd prefer the juice not be switched on or off with the key but if it's easier, that's fine.

Is this really that tough of a question? If nobody knows, do you know how I can use a multimeter to find out? I'm specifically looking for a ground wire to use. I think I know where the hot wire is.

i think i would probe around with the voltage meter until you come apon any wires reading 12 volt and see if they are useable and maybe you can just tap into them.....just make sure whatever ground you find is going to a battery.......how about the lights or lightswitch???.............................

Your light switch is a great 12 volt source coming from your #4 battery. There are 2 leads in the dash, very close to where your warning light is located that are sitting idle. If you use your multimeter you should see that when testing them they will be your full pack voltage. One is a ground that you could use if needed... just make sure that you have the right one! I believe those leads would normally be used for a CC battery gauge.

Hot = Blue
Ground = Black

Both are either 10 or 12 gauge. I can't remember. They're both located in the connecting plug of the light kit directly behind the dash. Use these two wires to power off of the number 4 battery. Scuba is right about the ground, but the wire he's referring to is a smaller gauge. It may be fine, depends on what you run off of it, amperage wise...

The best is to just run 4 or 5 leads, (at least 2 10 gauge wires for ground and power if you plan on going the 25 amp route,) from under your controller/OBC cover between the batteries, down the inside of the body panel, under the mat along the existing wire harness set in the groove in the floor and up into the dash. I used one for power from my light switch back to my license plate frame and will use another for backup lights as TahoeDawg mentioned in another thread. I have a fuse block under the cover by my 48/12 converter as well where I fused one wire at 15 amps for my radio and one wire at 15 amps for my additional power receptacle behind the right door on my dash used for an inverter which runs lights during different holiday seasons.

Scube, do I need to remove the floorboard/mat to run the wires or is there a trick to fishing them through there?

Remove it... It's easy.. just take out the bolts in the plastic floormat retainer and pull it up.
