Should I go 6:1 or 8:1

Id like to get the most speed that i can out of my stock engine. Got the 22 inch tires, program code #4 and the last thing im planning on getting are gears. Im pretty sure its safe to say that i will get a higher top speed with the 6:1 as opposed to 8:1. Just wondering how much more torque will I loose if I go 6:1. Would it be significantly more torque loss? Anyone here running 6:1 with a similar set up?

Running 8:1 rear, 22" tires, 36v motor running on 48v, 4g wires, H/D F/R switch, H/D solenoid and an altrax 500amp controller. Serious speed, but lost a lot of torque. Still has some neck whip to it but wouldn`t want to go to 6:1. I think it would be kinda doggish on take off. Starting to go to 2g wires. Have 2g on the batteries need to finish on the rest of the wires.

You want like the results of the 6:1 gear with a stock motor... When it comes to gears you have to be able to give & take.. A stock motor does not have enough torque to pull the 6:1 gear to give you the speeds in the amout of time you are looking for...

thx for the confirmation. I hope that with the higher speed code, larger wheels and 8:1 gears we can get the thing to go at least 23 mph.

You should be near 23 miles per hour just with the speed code and 22" tires. And FYI... an IQ controller doesn't have much power off the line as it is... gears are only gonna make it worse.. and also keep in mind that by changing the tire size, you've basically changed the gear ratio to begin with. We got in a shipment of 5 pathway cars with the high speed gears still in the rear ends. We lifted them all and put 22" tires on them. 4 out of 5 of them came back with burnt up motors. High speed gears are not good unless you have the power to push them... and a stock IQ doesn't. You'll constantly throw a "Thermal Cutback" code due to the overheating of the controller.

U seem to know your stuff TahoeDawgZ71. I have a friend with all of the above plus high speed motor and controller. Im concerned that if i go that route, my car will over heat or something if i dont maintain relevant high speeds since that is the set up. We will be using the cart at the Fl Keys over the weekend and need to maintain slow speeds, around 10 mph and i am concern that with a high speed set up, the car will over heat like my friends? thats why im thinking of just going with 22 tires and speed code. Would you recommend adding thicker battery cables with this simple set up?

I'd say you're not just asking for trouble. You're begging for it. 22" tires and a speed code with stock gearing shouldn't be a problem at all and would not require upgrading the wires.

Thanks David for your reply, would it be worth getting a high speed controller for now with wider guage cables. Would the greater torque power be substantial. Also, the local Club Car dealer here refers to the different speed options as A, B or C. Have you heard this before being a Tech for CC.

Absolutely. I know people on this forum that are running close to 30 miles per hour with their lifted IQ cars and haven't touched the gearing. Scubabud and Bamadozier can let you know more about what they've done to acquire the speed. Being a tech at a dealer, I'm not familiar with anything aftermarket at all. All we use is OEM stuff, and none of our stuff will go that fast. That's why I'm referring you to them. About the speed codes... here's how it works... The serial number from the car and controller must be submitted to Club Car. Club Car will send the dealer the high speed "Code" which consists of a Code A, Code B, and Code C. All with different numbers representing each code. It's like a combination on a lock. These three numbers must be entered into the controller with the programmer, and at this time, Speed setting "4" is unlocked and may be used.
