Default 1998 Club Car Problems

OK..I bought a non-working 1998 club car ds. I just put brand new batteries in it and will not move. When i push the pedal the solenoids click and it sound like minor noise from the motor, like it wants to go but doesn't have enough power. Is it the controller, OBC, or something minor? I do not have a charger for it until next week but the cart should at least move with brand new batteries. What kind of test can I run with charging? How can I use a voltage meter to figure out these issues? Someone please help:) It could even be the motor for all i know.

Check the battery voltage. I'm assuming yours is a 48-volt cart (6 8-volt batteries). Each battery should be around 8.5 volts fully charged. New batteries won't always be charged.

It takes very little amperage to energize the solenoids, but plenty to turn the motor, so a discharged battery pack will cause clicks, but no go.

Let us know what you find.

if its brand new batteries, the car should run.

You say it is making a noise and seems to want to go, make sure nothing is locked up, brakes, motor, etc. The car was parked for some reason, now you need to find out why.

Have you tested to be sure that you have full pack voltage to one large post of solenoid? Its easy to hook battery cable up wrong ( we all have done it ) Example 48 volt pack fully charged should read about 50-51 volts. I know you dont have charger yet so it will be lower but should be close. NOTE charge pack ASP and before running cart so batterys can be broken in correctly and put on charger after each use until about 15-30 charge cycles and then you will have full battery power. You could eliminate the motor as a problem by jumpering the two large posts on solenoid with heavy guage wire ( I use a car jumper cable ) FIRST jack up rear wheels and install jack stands so wheel are clear of ground, then block front wheel in both directions. Then add jumper and put F&R to forward and motor should work? If motor works then you have a bad internal contact in solenoid. Remember that a solenoid can click but not make internal contact.
WARNING DONT ALLOW MOTOR TO RUN OVER A FEW SECONDS AS IT CAN BE RUINED BY OVER SPEED AND POSSIBLY DAMAGE YOU WITH FLYING PARTS?

I made sure the brakes were not locked up. I checked the solenoid closest to the passenger side and it was reading 46-48 volts. When I get home today I will try to jump the solenoid. I did try to jump the motor from a diagram I found online. It was getting so late that I’m not sure if I even had it in forward position. The only thing I would get was sparks. After doing that I noticed the noise I was hearing was coming out of the controller instead of the motor. I had a 1995 DS that was doing something similar and it turned out to be the OBC. I can’t really suggest it being the OBC due to not yet having a charger. Thanks for the quick replies….I’ll try the test later today and get back to you.

Thanks

Oh and yes it is a 48 volt and I checked the voltage of each battery and they are all over 8 volts. I just bought the batts the other day.

Alright, I hooked up jumper cable to both large posts of solenoid. Nothing happened. Also i know you aren't supposed to use 4 ga audio cable battery wire but that was all i had to rig it up. I don't want to spend the money on welding cable until i know this thing works. I used nice terminals and everything is done right. Could that be an issue? What else can I try to see if it's the motor or controller?

With a minimum of 46-48 volts ( your test ) and the solenoid large terminals jumpered motor should turned? If battery cables were hooked up correctly you should have gotten at least a good size spark when touching both large terminals on solenoid?
Did forum confirm whether your cart is series ( F&R lever under right leg ) or Regen ( rocker switch under right leg ) as you said earlier that you " checked the solenoid nearest the passenger side" sounds like you have ( TWO ) solenoids and maybe you have jumped the wrong one?? Unless its been converted to newer system your second solenoid should have a large coils resistor hooked to one solenoid IF ITS A 1998 regen system?
There is a way to test series motors ( not sure if works on shunt "regen motor" ),that I know of but it requires at least a auto battery jumper set and several other HD cables to perform test?

I didn't get spark from either solenoid. My cart must be a regen system due to it having the f&r switch by right leg. There is two solenoids. One has large coils, one doesn't. Any other ideas on test I can do? Is there a way to check the controller? What will be my next step?

There is a way to test a ( series controller ) but I am not aware of one for regen units with out elaberet equipment?, BUT there must be one that maybe others in forum can help? Yes you have a regen unit with second solenoid with large coil resistor?
