Charge meter
Hey guys, on my '93 CC, there is a charge meter(veritcal LED meter) in the dash. I had unhooked the meter & lights when I was tracking the battery problems I was having but since that has all been solved I hooked the meter back up. The problem is that as soon as I hook it up, it will show full charge, but but drove the cart around for 10 minutes and the meter was down halfway. Unhooked it for like 30 seconds and reconnected it, it shows full charge again. It appears to be kind of like timed or something.
Anyone had anything similar to this? I may just replace it with an analog one. I'm in the process of reconnecting the lights as the wiring job on that was less than stellar and this may have the same scenario. Could be a big winter project in the future cause if I have to take the dash out, this baby's getting tore down and the body's getting a new paint job!! |

Re: Charge meter
Most of the digital meters work this way. It can be confusing if you aren't used to it. Especially when you start working on your cart when it isn't completely charged and you disconnect it to work on the electrical.

Re: Charge meter
I find the Curtis LED meter to be the pits... They show full bars for weeks and then when 1 bar drops off it is time to recharge.... Check it against a meter and see for yourself... An analogue meter will give a fair reading under load and a digital panel meter will give it to you in terms you can use anytime

Re: Charge meter
Don't worry about what the meter reads when you first hook it up, it reads the initial voltage and assumes it is full.
The Curtis meter resets itself each time you charge the cart. The “memory” in the meter will save the previous “state-of-charge” if the meter is reconnected to a battery that is not fully charged. The Curtis meter has 3 ways of resetting: 1) VPC (Volts per Cell) Once the battery voltages reach 2.09vpc the meter resets. 36v carts have 18 cells and 48v carts have 24 cells. 2) OCR (Open Circuit Reset) Battery disconnected 3) HVR (High Voltage Reset) Meter remains attached to batteries while charging |

Re: Charge meter
Thanks all!!
Update: I rewired the lights and everything is working fine now. It was the main power wire came unplugged at the switch, plus the ground on the tail lights were not grounded good. I figured out right away I don't like the lights wired into 2 of the six batteries as when you hit the gas, the lights dim. I think I will add a motorcycle battery to the compartment and run the lights off of that. Anyone else do this? |

Re: Charge meter
i shoehorned a optima red-top into my battery compartment for lights/stuff. a deepcycle would have been a better choice as you don't need the CCA of a starting battery.
AGM or gel cell can accommodate mounting in various orientations without spilling. -sj |

Re: Charge meter
Some people prefer to use a DC to DC reducer. This may cost more initially, but Install it and forget about having to recharge a separate battery which in most cases seems to need replacing each year according to our member's input.... look for a good 20-30 amp reducer.
