Shut off voltage adjust??
I have a club car 2004 48volt system...I know that when my batteries under charge reach 60.8 volt it shuts down my charger. Question is there a way that I can adjust my charger to shut off at 60.0 volt. I am told that some chargers shut off at 58 volt and some at 62 volts. which in my mind they are adjustable.
My whole thought process is if I can shut down the charging time there would be a shorter charging time and less heating of the battery and therefore less wear and tear of the batteries and as you know heat will prematurity make a good battery go bad. What are your thoughts on this Kas |

Re: Shut off voltage adjust??
How old are the batteries?
how hot are the batteries getting? how many hours does it charge to get to 60.8v to shut the charger off? are these 12v batteries? |

Re: Shut off voltage adjust??
If your OBC ( On Board Computer ) is working correctly and your batterys are in good condition the charge will be automatically taken care of, by one of the best charging systems available for carts. There is a whole series of tests that OBC performs while doing daily charge that maintains batterys in best possible condition and extended life span. YES THERE WILL BE VARIATIONS IN CHARGE RATE AND TIME DEPENDING ON MANY FACTORS. Unless you are an electronic engineer versed in battery controls I would leave well enough alone and enjoy your cart. You will be required to clean battery cases and cable connections, check distilled water levels on bi-weekly basis and of course plug charger in after each use.

Re: Shut off voltage adjust??
Old Mec,
Thanks for your reply....As far as the OBC goes, it monitors the output of the battery pack and when the pack get to some x voltage it sends a signal to the charger and the charger shuts off...That x voltage is equal to the output of the battery pack. What else does the OBC do in the cart? I am not trying to be a smart *** I am trying to find out what the OBC does other than the output voltage. It sounds like you have many years of experience and I am trying to pick your brain and the more I can find out, my batteries will last longer.. Ps I am an eletrictronic engineer, but I am not versed in battery controls. Being retired I have nothing to do except maintain my batteries and play golf. My batteries are inspected every week, water added as needed, check the connections and clean the batteries as needed and once a month I use a hydrometer to check the SG Kas |

Re: Shut off voltage adjust??
just remember to use distilled water and not to fill completely to the top as the batteries need a bit of room for gases. Filling the batteries to the bare top as well as charging with low levels of H2o will cause them to swell over the long run

Re: Shut off voltage adjust??
On the later model carts like your there are other functions than just battery charging which include the most important circuit to allow solenoid to close. I must admit that I have not kept up with newer models OBC's additional functions and for a really good article on OBC's go to Doc Bob ( may be slightly different forum name ) forum site as he is retired engineer? and did most extensive writting on them. Also a top notch person that works with later model carts all the time is TahoeDawgz71 head shop man at Augusta CC dealer.
You are my kind of person as you use a hydrometer to test batterys like I was taught in the 40's when I started apprentice ship at garage. Now days the kids want a easy way out and dont want to take the time needed and instead use a digital volt meter which helps but does not give full story of battery condition. Happy to allow you to pick this old brain ( whats left after 78 years ) and all other members anytime as this is what the forum is all about. |

Old Mec, you are a nice fellow, and I must say, I am very impressed. Most 78 year old people dont want anything to do with computers and here you are posting away!! That is just too cool!!!

Re: Shut off voltage adjust??
Old Mech,
You and I went to same school, except we took different buses to get there! This the way I was taught( we are both about the same age)... I have an other question!! and I am not sure if I should post an other thread. If the hydrometer has a reading less than 1.250 (1.30 to 1.275 is good and 1.250 to 1.225 is marginal). what do you do? do you add more acid or get a new battery? what is the recommended process here? Re: Shut off voltage adjust??
KASCHIRO--I was taught that IF SG gets "below 1.250" which is approx 85% ( on only one cell and all others are at 1.277 then its getting weak ), A=IF you havent added distilled water recently and B=after waitng at least one hour after full charge with automatic shut off, C=and then after try charging batterys several more discharge-charge cycles and if the one cell wont come up above 1.250 then its time to replace WHOLE BATTERY PACKin near future. I have personally run cells down until surrounding cells start using unusual amounts of distilled water which means charger is boiling surrounding cells trying to bring bad cell up to full power. I now have ( 9 ) year old 8 volt Trojans that are showing age and starting to run out of steam sooner, but on Obamasnation limited income I will save the $450-$600 and up for later?
Not ever having the time nor the want to learn golf ( own auto shop and raising 6 children ) my carts have always been for transportation and I am able to give a little when it comes to weak batterys. While you have needs to cover anywhere from 18-36 holes without ending up pushing cart back to 19th hole, so at the point of slow operation near end of course I recommend a load test to confirm batterys condition and replacement with quality golf cart batterys. Good indication of quality is actual weight, NOT ADVERTISED WEIGHT. By the way I never add acid to a battery unless its shipped dry. GSXRFAN--THANKS I never had time until forced retirement ( 20 plus years ago ) for things like computers, but with a self taught wife I had to learn computer operation or else? |
