Need general "getting started" info on 96 CC...
I bought our first cart about 2 months ago... and now I am completely hooked on carting! I never would have thought...

I have been able to determine that my cart is a 1996 CC DS Electric (48v)... it is lifted with 22 inch tires - it was used a Golf Course (still has numbers on the front) but don't know anything else - and am not sure where to start. I've gone over the cart looking for clues as to what I have plus I've been pouring over this forum trying to figure out what is what.

I've seen posts about:
- "regen" (but not sure if my cart is one of these)
- 400 - 500 amp controllers (Alltrax and PQ) - but don't know which I have presently
- soleniods (by the way, is it possible that I have 2 soleniods as at first glance it seems that way).

I want to make sure I am maintaining the cart correctly, and I'm itching to do some speed/torgue upgrades. But I need to know exactly what I have before I can start. Should I try to locate an Owners Manual or something? Where to start?

Any help in how I can learn what I have here would be much appreciated!

OK... just ran across a post with a link to a wiring diagram that looks closer to my cart (ie 2 soleniods): http://www.golfcartpartsdirect.com/e...tshow/211.html

The poster said he had a 96 Powerdrive Plus 48V - how can I determine if my cart is a Powerdrive Plus?

My cart is s/n A9634-520662

I am no expert but one of them will probably answer you soon. They probably will need to know what type of f/r switch you have. The one between the seats or on the dash. How many batteries do you have? 6 8volt, or 6 6 volt?

I only see one wiring diagram in the stickies for your year DS. So it is most likely a 48volt cart. I don't know what to look for to recognize if it is a regen cart though. The real question is if your diagram doesn't match the one in the stickies is if your cart was already upgraded with a controller and what not.

I would get your self a service manual as it WILL save you time and money in long run.
If you have a lever under your right leg you have a series cart, and if you have a rocker type switch under your leg its a Regen-1 cart which would accounts for 2 solenoids.
Stock your cart came with a Curtis 250-275 amp controller and about a 3 Hp motor. In 1995-1997 CC used several different pot units ( throttle pedal speed controls ) and some are no longer availible, so you may depending on pedal castings ( 2 types used ) may when needed convert to modern MCOR control, or a Curtis PB-6 unit?
I would start with minimum of 4 guage multi strand welding cable cables through out ( battery-motor-F&r-etc ) to help with lost power because of lift and larger diameter tires.
Then when funds are available you might consider a higher amp controller 300-400-500 and possible motor HP update? I personally like Alltrax controllers and there are several different very good motor suppliers available. When picking motors-controllers combinations always give all information about lift, tire size, cable size, extra weight like rear seat and HD springs and future plans for cart to get best combination of performance available.

PHYCOFLIP - My cart has 6 batteries: Trojan T-875 Milage Master. Looks like from what I can see on the web that these are 8v. Also, this is the link I found on another post that looks more like my woring diagram then anything I saw on the stickys:


Also, my cart has a ROCKER type f/r switch, and following OLC MEC's reply it must be a Regen 1 as it does have the 2 soleniods like the diagram.

OLD MEC - I will definately buy a service manual right away. Your advice on where to get one?

Next I'll move to the cables you suggested - something my son and I can do together this winter. I'll log your other advice for when the funds are available.

Is there any need for me to determine if the cart is a "Powerdrive Plus" (see my other post above)?

I am thankful for both of your responses and input - and I appreciate the patience you both are showing with a real greenhorn! Let me know anything else you can think of...

OLD MEC: After reading your message and reading some more posts I have a question:

Do you think I need to go with the 2 gauge cables (vs 4 gauge) since my cart is lifted, 22 in tires, rear seat etc. - as I do plan on upgrading the controller and motor this spring (assuming by your post that HP = horsepower) ?

I hope this is not a dumb question - still trying to get my bearings on all this.

THERE ARE NO DUMB QUESTIONS ONLY DUMB IF UNASKED. Thats how we all learn and I am told when you stop you might as well be dead????
You are correct "HP" is horse power
Your batterys are mid amp range for 8 volt batterys ( same as I use in my own cart now over 9 years old and still going good even though I have much heavier body than stock )
Manuals-I would check with forum sponsors first and then if not avaliable check forums for sale site or some thing like Ebay. On your year it may require a 1995 manual with 1996 update manual as well? I see more this way than just 1996 regular single manuals.
Charger-All same for the years from about 1995 to 2005 model CC part number 101802201. My 1996 is CC-Lester Model #17930.
Battery cables-I use a rule of thumb that seems to work out for me? Controllers from 275to 300 amps I use 4 guage. Controllers from 400 to 500 I use 2 guage. Controllers from 500 and up I use 1 guage.
Be sure to give the needed info shown in previous posts when checking on which controller and motor combo to use and then you can pick correct guage wiring to use. Dont get horse before cart so to speak?

I believe 4ga is good up to 400amps, 2ga up to 500amps

On my previous post about wiring for 400 amp controllers it seems that I have recieved so many questions on why I recommend that they feel is too heavy with 2 guage? The reason I use it instead of 4 guage is that often when running a lifted, windshielded, 22" and up tired cart with rear seat and springs, etc the cables seem to get much warmer at speed than I like? In one case I had a local cart owner whose all new 4 guage welding cables, 5 hp motor, and the matched controller got very warm and when I contacted manufacturer ( not Alltrax ) they recommended going up to next guage on all cables? I had gone over all cable, and cable connections and controller mounting, etc without finding any problems so contacting controller manufacturer is always my next step. This did in fact solved the problem to owners satifaction and has been running fine for over 2 years. I base my ideas on what has solved problems and worked for me in the past? If the additional costs of about .30 per foot ( last time I purchased cable stock ) plus minor difference of cable ends cost isnt being on safe side what can I say? I would like to get input from others with findings on this question please.

Many thanks! I've logged this info for when I begin to replace the wires.

So that I don't put the cart before the horse (great point OLD MEC!), before I proceed I'll look at the options for upgrades (controller, motor) and make a solid plan as I want to pursue some reasonable torgue and speed upgrades (being mindful of safety as this is a family cart).

Thanks for getting me started on this as until your responses I was totally in the dark about all this. I really appreciate your patience.

CC, I recently upgraded to 2ga instead of 4ga. The reason I did so is because I am about to go with 500amp controller. Cables are cool to the touch after long rides. I think the question is "why not" since going wider will not hurt in any way. The word"overkill" which has been used in the past in regards to this situation confuses me. Overkill would mean that going with 2ga instead of 4 ga will have ill-effects on the components. If anything, I personally believe that it could only help. Their was one member who said "if I can do it all over again I would go to 2ga instead". 400amp controller does call for at minimum a 4ga setup but as OldMec said with lift, wheels, etc. probably be better just to be on the safe side. Again, going wider will only help with future mods such as upgrade to 500amp controller so why not?

Overkill is applying more resource or material than needed.... Resulting in diminished return of investment.
Sort of like buying a Mercedes when a Honda would have done the job.
Up until 1 yr ago Alltrax engineers didn't recommend 2 gauge for any of their 650 amp controllers.... now they recommend them for 500 amp and up applications.
By my calculations #2 costs nearly twice as much #4 cables to build. Your costs will vary, I buy the best materials in bulk.
These are engineered calculations to show the benefit of 2g over 4g in a 48 inch long test cable.
48 volts 200 amps #4 cable = 47.75v
48 volts 200 amps #2 cable = 47.87v

I have carts out there using #4 cable and 500 amp controllers and PQ motors running 30mph without problem.... so you have to decide for yourselves if #2 or even #1 cables are needed or not.
