Swollen Batteries
Just curious to know what you guys think. Some of my batteries are kind of swollen. Do you think they are still good? Should I just top them off and see what happens, or do you recommend replacing them?
Thanks, Brian |

Re: Swollen Batteries
Battery cases swell when they are heated repeatedly. This usually happens from charging. It is a sign of age but it does not determine their ability to hold a charge. A Hydrometer is the proper tool for that.

Re: Swollen Batteries
Is it better to use distilled water or go to a parts store and buy the acid that they sell?

Re: Swollen Batteries
use distilled water ALWAYS. Only use acid if a battery is weakening but cannot give you advice there. Acid will give them a "jump start" sort of speak and is used as a last alternative before declaring them dead. When you fill batteries, dont overfill by filling completely to the top. Leave about a 1/4 inch to leave space for natural gases that form in the battery. Filling up batteries to the top and not leaving room for gasses is another reason why batteries swell. Unless you have a bad/weak battery dont use acid. Again, if you do have a weak battery not taking up full charge, I would ask for advice from other members who have more experience with this type of issue.

Re: Swollen Batteries
The batteries have been neglected, so I think I will try the water trick first. Thank you for your information. I am sure I will have plenty more questions.

Re: Swollen Batteries
Normal? make sure you keep them filled. I would fill them after fully charged. Good luck.......
