Default I can't believe it!!

Every one of my batteries (all 6) were dry. It took 3gal of water to get them back to normal!! They were severely abused. I can only hope that the water will get them atleast 75% back to a normal battery!!

3 gallons, sure you dont have a leak somewhere. Make sure you charge them fully overnight, check them tomorrow and let us know what kind of readings you get... Hopefully they live!

I put the caps back on instead of leaving them open (but I did leave about 1/4in of space inside the cells). I keep my cart in my enclosed trailer. Is there any risk of fire or anything?

I think your batteries are likely done. After charging check them all with a hydrometer to ascertain the condition.
Leave the trailer door open when you charge it.

Batteries can be explosive especially in their current condition. Make sure their is no gas or anything cumbustable near them. I would feel more comfortable if their was some ventilation in your trailer. Open a window or prop the door.

Should I just let them charge for an hour or so then start over again tomorrow evening?

Yeah, yeah, yeah... How long have you had this cart? We all know the first thing you do when you get your cart is check the water level. Common now?
