Batteries not holding
Cart stored for 6 months. Club car precedent 2007
Not holding charge. Will charge and charger will go from 15 down to 0 and shut off as it should. BUT can immediatel recharge and charger will kick over to almost 15 again and then slowly recharge batteries. Even doing so, cart can then only do 27 holes of golf max. and by the end of that is very sluggish and difficult to load onto trailer. Just not enough power left in batteries. ? - Lead battery is much lower on volt meter - almost totally dead. Also, would disconnecting all batteries, then charging them individually with an automotive charger to get them up to par - then reconnect batteries and put back on club car charger help? HELP PLEASE |

Re: Batteries not holding
You need your batteries tested to see if they need replacing. Letting them sit for 6 months encourages sulfating of the lead plates...running the batteries down where you can feel it running slow and weak sulfates the plates too. Heavily sufated plates cannot make or hold as much amperage as they did when new .... likely you just need new batteries. An automotive charge will not help this situation.... To test recharge. Let them sit 12 hours and test the specific gravity of each cell with a good arrow and dial type hydrometer....

Re: Batteries not holding
Thanks Scottyb,
I know after a charge the Lead battery (1st battery on driver side) is only at 55% and the other 3 batteries are at 80%. What should the sp. gr. read and where do I get a hydro meter? Thanks and I really appreciate it. I was set to go to Sam's and get a new Exide battery. I'm in southern TX. and the cart is put in inside storage during the summer months as old retires -snowbirds go back north. |

Re: Batteries not holding
An auto parts store will have a modern hydrometer. You do not want the old floating ball type.
If you change one battery you may make it through the season. The old batteries will make the new one old before long... but this may be your best bet, if the others are still good.... The hydrometer will tell the tale if you let them sit 12 before testing. Idle storage in the heat = is a formula for battery demise. Remove the heat & have somebody recharge once a month to get more years out of your batteries. |

Re: Batteries not holding
Let me ask you this-- if the sp gr is < 1.25 then are the batteries bad?
Secondly, what is your take on the Epson salt to batteries and charging each on individually. I'm talking the batteries that are 80%. Then adding battery acid to these batteries. Left few steps out to shorten this message. But would that help to rid the crystals and get the proper ph. for the batteries? Or what about the Battery Equalizer addative? And what would cause the battery to possibly boil? I am assuming it has as I noticed some water around the plastic caps on one battery. Thanks |

Re: Batteries not holding
JUDINBUD--Most snow birds at least in my park leave charger plugged in while gone during summer as its designed to work OK in this manner. I personally take care of several carts in my park and check on water levels that can get down low enough over a hot summer to be below top of plates? Also here our power source is not that reliable so I have on occasion had to reset a charger, but this is very uncommon. Those that dont leave charger on, charge pack to full charge, clean battery cases with lots of water and baking soda and then disconnect pack positive and negative cables ( cover ends with electrical tape ) for safety and to help slow the discharge process. If you have some one in your park or neighbor you trust have them moniter the batterys while you are gone. Leave them a gallon or two of distilled water and access to electric panel in case power surge cuts off circuit breaker in main panel.
RIB33024--When I read his post I took it to mean "LEAD BATTERY" meaning "FIRST BATTERY" in pack of 4?? Rather than lead used in batterys? |

Re: Batteries not holding
Scottyb,
That would be great to have someone do that. But in the park we're in, cart wouldn't be here when we'd get back. Summer break ins are terrible and theift is bad. Mobiles and sheds are targeted. Carts have been stolen, cart chargers, etc. That's why we put the cart at a storage place but they store like 100 golf carts and aren't going to check the carts till you are ready to pick it up. |
