Default 1998 Club Car 48V motor knock

Fellas,

My new to me 48v Club Car Series has a knock in the motor. I describe it as a knock, but also a thump is appropriate. The rate of thumping increases linearly with an increase in drive shaft RPM. it sounds like something rotating is hitting the case of the motor, rather than a bearing.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like you have the good old knock caused by looseness between motor shaft and differential input shaft? Check your Guide Ring #101789101 and Install new Retainer Ring # 101822801 and use Adhesive # 1010813202 To hold guide ring in place. Sorry this requires removal of motor to inspect? REMEMBER when removing cables from motor to use ( TWO "2" wrenches, one to hold nut holding stud to motor while removing cable nut with other. Otherwise you can spin stud coming through from inside of motor breaking connections loose?

Excellent. I have the motor off and will order the parts. Piece of cake.

I notice on the diagram for my motor, it does NOT indicate the adhesive is required, unlike others that say that a lubricant is required for similar parts. Is there a danger in installing the new guide ring without the adhesive?

Yes,you have to use the glue to hold it in place and it has to dry for 24hours before you can install it.You will need to make sure all the splines line up also.

OK,

I guess then it is safe to assume the guide ring that is currently installed used adhesive to get it in there. Is there any trick I should know about to remove it? or has the adhesive worn out by now?

Thanks

I have the same knock on my motor, I have pulled the motor off. Where is the guide ring and the retainer ring located on the motor. I have a 2000 DS, 48V.

I am assuming the parts that are being discussed are #18,19, and 20 on the shaft of the motor?

Yes, I believe so. Those are the parts that I've ordered. Should be here by Wednesday, so I'll report if the knock goes away!
