Default CC IQ speed sensor questions

I live on a 500 acre island in the US Virgin Islands, where carts are the most common form of personal transportation. I own two CC 48v electric IQ carts, a 2003 Villager 4 bought new in 12/02 and still running strong, and an '07 reman Gold standard 4 passenger. The '03 has the snap in sensor (GE motor, I believe) and the '07 has a bolt on sensor (ADC motor, I believe). The carts are in storage during the summer, with batteries disconnected. Once a month the batteries are reconnected and charged, watered, and disconnected again. This winter when I rolled the '07 out it would not run in reverse without shuddering and cutting out, unless I gave it the full pedal. Forward speed topped out at the famous 8 mph, and downhill the cart freewheeled. Because I maintain these carts myself as well as helping other owners, I have an IQDM, and it said speed sensor fault as you might expect. I know I must replace the speed sensor, which I have heard is an expensive part, but I suspect CC buys it from another manufacturer, so I am asking what is the smart way to acquire a replacement sensor? I can't seem to find them on the internet. Also, does anyone have an idea what I might have done to blow the sensor, or is it just an act of God? And finally, I have read that there is a magnet attached to the motor armature which has been suspected in some cases - is this a separate part and repair procedure, or does the sensor come with a new magnet as a kit? I am hoping that one of the expert professionals on the forum will answer my questions - for which I will be very grateful.

correct.

i don't have one, so i don't know for sure... but i suspect that they use a hall effect sensor. link

they are available in different polarities & voltages, so you'll need to open up the stock one to id it or probe a working sensor.

if the sensor has only 2 wires, its likely a reed switch. link
cheers,

Assuming you have a curtis controller...
from curtis:

Speed Sensor
A speed sensor is required for use with any 1266 controller. The speed sensor must be of a pulse type, and must interface to the controller with an open collector NPN transistor output. The most common sensor type will be a Hall effect switch IC, such as the Allegro type UGN3132 or Micro Switch type SS11; these work with an eight-pole (four pulses per revolution) ring magnet attached to the motor shaft.
The UGN3132 has been discontinued. The direct replacement from Allegro is the A1203. You want the UA package as the LH is surface mount. $1.55 from Digikey

The one linked above from sparkfun should work as well.
Cheers,
-sj

You can just pop the old one out with a flat blade screwdriver. They dont go bad that often but they do go bad and I would spend the extra money and get the right part.

Thanks to all for the responses. I would love to have the benefit of TD's advice. The bad sensor is the bolt-on type with two bolts on the ears of the mount. What does an oem part cost and does it also involve the magnet(s) on the armature? Should I disconnect the sensor when storing the cart? I don't want to replace it again! Can it be found on eBay or Craig's List?

this is the only one i could find from the sponsors and its $150. link im guessing the bolt-on type is along the same lines.

magnets don't go bad unless severely overheated.

$150 for a $1.50 hall sensor is absurd!

You could buy a pimpin' soldering station to do the repair and still have $ left over.

I believe they are in the $150 range, but I must tell you. I had an 04 IQ cart that was having the same problems except I still had reverse, the dealer scanned it and told me it was a bad sensor. They replaced it and then told me my bad controller burned out the new sensor while still in their possession. They charged me labor and parts for their diagnosis screw up, and told me I needed a new controller.

The controller was under warranty so I sent it back and got a replacement, installed new controller with the sensor the dealer claimed was bad and everything worked fine. Bottom line, mine was the controller and not the sensor even though the scan read sensor.

I have a bad motor in the garage and I am not sure if it is the pop in or bolt on sensor, but I will check for you. I would sell it much less than $150 if it will work for you.

Are you a former Edsel mechanic??? Based on this forum alone, it's a borderline pandemic. If what I fear is true, I just fried my second one - it's a crime that there's no TSB/recall equivalent from ClubCar as would be called for from DOT/NHTSA - if not on the speed sensor itself, then on the controllers (which all seem to be Curtis branded).

Has anyone ever appealed directly to Augusta, GA to get ClubCar's opinion? There should also be an easier way to diagnose the sensor with a multimeter or some way to troubleshoot the controller - though it also seems that Curtis did a poor job in their base program if it only ever spits out a faulty speed sensor...

Frustrating!!
