electric to gas remake 96 ds
i installed a yamaha r6 engine in my ds. i have only two problems left to correct. first is a reverse gear, and secondly is more top speed, or much higher gearing. no i am not insane(before you ask) but it needs to be geared about twice higher than it is now. i did install the highest gear set i could get for it but still not near enough. at 50 mph the engine is spinning at 12,500 rpm. so driving back down the return road towing the drag bike back to the pits, the cart is screaming. needless to say, this is not good for the engine or my ears. i know it needs a gas car transaxle, i need suggestions for more top speed . any help will be greatly appreciated by me and my friend on the bike. thanks, rusty sr.

Just asking, why are you doing 50mph while towing on the return road?? Speed limit is 15 ;)

Re: electric to gas remake 96 ds
i do around 15 on the return road, and about 25 on pit road to go get him. the 50 mph was a top speed vs rpm example. but at 25 in 6th gear it is screaming.

Re: electric to gas remake 96 ds
I dont know how you connected the gas engine to the electric cart differential but unless you have enough room for sizing sprocket or gear, or different diameter drive and driven clutches your only option of course would be tire diameter?
You might want to check "Surplus Center.Com" as they have new Dana-Spicer axles with drum hydraulics and auxilery out put shaft for 4 wheel drive. ALSO HOW ABOUT SOME PICTURES OF YOU MODIFICATIONS? |

Re: electric to gas remake 96 ds
i will try to get pictures up. it took me about 45minutes to get the three i have on here. those were before the engine change. it doesn't look much different. as far as room for gearing, that is exactly the problem. there is none. the best thing i can think of is a somewhat small inline overdrive box to mount between input shaft of the transaxle and the drive chain. i hve not seen such a critter produced yet,not to say there isn't one, i just haven't found it.i do have a walk aroud video,i will see if i can get my son to post a link.

Re: electric to gas remake 96 ds
i finaly got the pictures. the jackshaft works great, but no real gearing options. i have a plan in mind to build a small overdrive unit to replace the jackshaft. this setup survived two high rpm(12,500) launches on a very sticky drag strip. then the chain broke!!

Re: electric to gas remake 96 ds
What size chain ar you using? So hard to tell from pictures? It looks like motor cycle chain so either it must have been old chain or out of alignment to have broken after only two hard starts I would think?
For gearing changes you might look at surpluscenter.com ( Berden Sales Co. ) lots of stuff available including a golf cart size hydraulic brake gas differentials set up for 4 wheel drive. |
