05 Club Car Precedent
Hello everyone, I'm new here and my name is Bryan. A good friend of mine has a 05 Club Car, and his kid decided to go off roading with it. I had to replace the batteries as when the left side of the cart was in the air, (sharp left turn) the acid leaked out of the drivers side batteries.. He didn't tell anyone about it and charged the cart.
That being said.... I got the cart to work, but the steering wheel is way off. The drivers side adjust nut on the rack is finger loose. I am assuming there is a way to align this cart, but I am not sure how and if there are any special tools required to do so. Growing up I had 18ea 1985-1989 E-Z-GO electric carts both 3 and 4 wheeled so I am familiar with carts in general, but this is the first Club Car I had to work on.. Any help would be gladly appreciated..... Bryan |

Hi Bryan,
Before you get to the wheel aglinment, check a few other things, upper control arms may be bent, no amount of aligment will fix that. check spindles they may be bent, this may be difficult to spot. Wheel aligment is pretty simple. front wheels should have 1/4" - 3/8" toe in. Camber should be equalized on each side. good luck and welcome to the site |

FIRST WELCOME BRYAN. Glad its your friends cart and not yours.
If it was my cart I would make the Stupid A$$ Kid do the work and pay the bills? BESIDES a GOOD KICK IN THE B&%$%$#@ and grounded for a year or two? GOLFCARTGUY is correct dont try any alignment as the front end parts and or frame or all may be bent or damaged. The Precedents seem to have upper controls arms that bend very easily ( just hit a curb is enough ) so I would start there and then to upper clevis assemblys that connect control arms to spindles, then the spindles arms themselves for bending where rack and pinion assembly connects, and lastly the Front structure assembly, that control arms, shocks, rack and pinion assembly are bolted to. |

To check "TOE IN" you place the wheels straight ahead and roll forward on a flat surface about 5-10 feet to equalize front end. #1-Then find a tread or mold edge nearest the center of tires the same on each side #2 measure across ( rear ) of tires ( at about 1/2 of the tire total highth from ground ) from that point to the same point on other tire #3 then do the same on the ( front ) of tread on each side #4 the difference is toe in should be 1/8-1/4" LESS IN FRONT.
To adjust the rack and pinion ( steering ) assembly has tie rod ends ( swivel joints that are attached to spindles at front ) with lock nuts on each side of rack #1 loosen lock nut and turn shaft ( going into rack and pinion assembly ) toward or away from tie rod end to correct ( adjustment on each side should only be 1/2 of total amount ) to make suspension even #2 then tighten lock nuts and you are done. "CAMBER" test again roll cart forward 5-10' to settle suspension For this test you need a framing square used by carpenters ( long enough on one side to reach from ground to upper tire sidewall 24" ) A- place square "against side wall" of tire at top and on flat on ground at bottom on each side B- measure amount of space from square to lower side wall on tire C- if measurement is approximatly the same distance on each side then camber is correct. To adjust do following #1 lossen 4 bolts holding front spring clamp against spring #2 now loosen the lock nut on "eccentric bolt" ( when turned moves spring from side to side ) going through center of spring #3 taking wrench placed on flat surfaces ( beyond threaded end ) on eccentric bolt #4 rotate it in either direction to get proper camber adjustment NOTE movement of eccentric bolt will be swing spring in small circle so very small turn can make a big difference from side to side. Hope this makes testing and adjustments easy for you? |
