Default Can Batteries Change Polarities???

Got a call from a buddy of mine the other day who asked me that question. He has a 48v CC and the directionals were left on causing the batteries to go completely dead. He said he recharged it and now 2 of the batteries have changed polarites. I'm a gasser guy and never heard of this before, has anyone here heard of this? If it is true what does he do now? Thanks, Ed

He should be able to remove those batteries from the string, draw them down with a light bulb load till dead, then recharge them correctly with a 12v automotive charger to restor proper polarity.

I have seen this happen with individual cells in 24 volt NICad aircraft battery's. Gornoman has the best option to save those battery's

GORNOMAN is correct in hows to take care of problem. In the old days when we still got our batterys dry, we added acid and then put them on charger and I have seen and done it myself of hooking up to charger reversed polarity. That as far as I know is the only way you can reverse polarity?

get rid of those batteries...do not try to save them....

it can be very dangerous if it decides to reverse again while your on the cart

i have seen it happen once with a friends old ezgo, we did what gorno suggested

and the first time he used the cart.... boom... the 2 batts that fliped exploded..

no one was hurt but it could have been worse

and on a second note:

if the negative plate in the battery has oxidized enough to flip the battery is no good anyway..

My buddy just told me he got in touch with Trojan Battery's Tech people, and what they told him makes sense. The batteries that changed are the ones that the lights are connected to. When they drained (completely) they drew from the batteries they are connected to in the cart ( in series + to-) those 2 batteries were stone dead while the others still had some life, when he hooked up the charger they charged in reverse. I hope I explained that right, sorry guys I'll stick with my gasser 1 battery is enough for me! Thanks for the fast replys, Ed

Just a quick question.... With the batteries wires in series, and charged with a 36/48 volt pack charger...How does the polarity change?? Wouldn't this create a positive to negative somewhere, completing the circuit...shorting the entire pack??
