You can tap off the battery pack for 24 volts, its not good if used alot but for your use should be fine. ( makes some batterys lower charged ) than rest causing over charging and distilled wate loss.

Thanks for the input. I considered that, but decided to risk the 36v as to keep the pack even. I figured "it's only 12 more volts" and a little more speed in the up/down isn't a bad thing. (they're doing it all over the place with 24v electric scooters)
If I burn out the motor, I do have a spare and will wire it for 24v or get a good 36v-24v step down converter. These are very heavy duty high quality little motors coming from the medical devices field. Over-engineered and then some - I'm sure it will last longer than I will....I put 200 lbs in the very front of the tilt bed and it raised it up without even groaning....it was alot more work for me to get 200 lbs in to the bed! (but getting it out was easy!)
