Rapid Acceleration

I have a '86 Club Car 36V. A few months ago it stopped gradually accelerating and started going from 0 to top speed when the pedal is depressed. Any thoughts on what this is? Thanks.

Your cart has 5 solenoids which regulate speed. The cart goes through these solenoid speeds when you accelerate. One or more of your solenoids have failed.

Thanks for the quick response! Any idea which solenoid? I replaced one last night, didn't fix problem, but I thought it might be one of those. Any way to test them? Or just replace them one by one? Thanks for the help!

The solenoids operate in sequence from MAIN ( that feeds power through flat bus bar to rest of solenoids ) on drivers side, up to high speed passenger side that by passes the resistor coils. You should hear 5 distict clicks showing that micors in pedal speed control box are working correctly. Have some one slowly press pedal while you listen for sounds.
NOTE Solenoids can click but not make internal contact and if so need replacement.

NOTE do this testing with the rear wheels jacked up off of the ground for safety

So in testing out the solenoid, the one I replaced didn't fix the problem, so was moving onto the next one. Left cart on, in forward, went to remove solenoid with socket, and sparks flew from f/r switch or thereabouts. Now no movement anywhere. What have I done??

Sounds like you may have blown the Micro switch for the Master Solenoid

you might have took out the F&R wiring if it was smoking or maybe even the switch itself.......so your gonna have to get that fixed if you did than make sure you disconnect main power before touching anything with a wrench or socket...........as mentioned you might have 1 or 2 bad soleniods......with cart jacked up slowly press pedal and watch wheels while you liston for soleniod clicks.....if your cart has just high speed chances are #2 and #3 soleniod are bad................2nd from left and the one next to it..................................
