Default Re: Charger pegs amp meter ?????

Hi Guys,

I thought we were done here, but I do have one more question. The obc is getting very warm......... even somewhat hot it seems while this thing is charging. Is this normal?

I've never noticed it on regular carts I guess because the obc is hard to get to. On this carryall its right up front and I put my hand on it just to see and it is kind of hot.

Thanks, BG

It stays at 19-20 amps on the meter all the time. I kept a check on the pack voltage today while it was charging and all the way up to 50.6 volts the charger ran at 20 amps.
The onboard charger and the OBC got up close to 150 degrees F. I lost my nerve and pulled the plug on it at that point. It never backed off the amps at all.
As noted above all connectios are good. Individual batteries range from 6.25 to 6.35. This carryall has 8- 6 volt batts.
I have also reset OBC..........no change. I am starting to suspect the obc may be bad.' Anyone ever seen this before. All help is appreciated.

i have never paid attention to see if they get hot but if your sure all batteries and connections are good the one thing i would do before i replace OBC is replace battery cables to make sure you don,t have a cable thats went bad under the insulation where you can,t see it.........now that i have seen..........if that dosn,t cure it than OBC.............................

It really sounds like U may have a defective charger, can U borrow someone else's charger and see how it acts. Or take yours to a friend, or CC dealer for testing ?

At least we can narrow it down to the cart or the charger ?

The Carryall has an onboard charger but I can run jumpers to my 96 DS. It has 6-8 volt battries instead of the Carryall's 8- 6 volt battries. Think that would be safe enough to try the on board charger to my DS.

Sounds like a battery or cable issue. Where the batteries ran completly down? How do the hydrometer? The battery can have good voltage but still test bad. Put an amp meter on the cables and see what it looks like for start to end of pack.

The OBC will get warm while charging but should not get extremely hot. I would check the battery pack and wiring.

Are the bubbling when they are charging?

Just had a cart that did the same thing and ended up being that the batteries where causing the problem. Had to mess with the batteries charging in small charge cycles to get the batteries back up. They where 2010 batteries that had been severly discharged.

Ok, I hooked the Carryall on board charger up to a known good battery pack and the charger works normal with the good battery pack. OBC runs cool and everything.
That looks like the problem.

Thanks to all for input and help.

Best Regards, BG
