Default Winch Anchor Point

I wanted a piece of pipe 1" to 2" in diameter about 30" long to use as an anchor point for my winch if I get stuck where there are no trees. I keep an axe on my cart and can drive the pipe in the ground and use it to pull my cart out of a bog.

I thought about using a 1" piece of galvanized pipe that I can keep behind my seat. I mounted some Quickfist mounts and I can store the pipe there out of the way.

My question is the 1" galvanized pipe is relatively heavy and I try to keep the weight down on my cart so I was considering a piece of aluminum pipe. My problem is how big of diameter of a piece of aluminum pipe would be strong enough and what thickness would I need?

Is weight that big of a concern when you want to maximize your travel distance?

Thanks
Thomas

Default Re: Winch Anchor Point

I understand your concern about weight but aluminum pipe unless you can find really thick wall pipe will bend or crush easily compared to steel pipe? MAYBE A 2" SOLID ALUMINUM ROD WOULD WORK but weight might be close to steel pipe?? If you pound steel pipe 24" or more at a sharp angle ( slanted away from cart ) into ground and mount winch connection at ground level I would guess that a 1" steel pipe will work? This is my thinking and I hope I am not leading you wrong?
